Now, I know folks are going to scream - "but the Acetone will decay your seals!!" "Oh, bad move Clint." or just "Clint, you're an idiot." <- this one is nothing new.

First off, I am not recommending you do this at all. I did it because I wanted a completely clean slate to start from, with no contamination. Second, it was only in for a total of less than 15 minutes. Third, I have a spare 6MT sitting on a pallet right here. If I majorly screwed something up doing this I would find the time or make the time to swap the trannies.

So anyway, I drained the acetone. Front diff came out clear, but the tranny fluid came out dirty. Another quick rinse, and it came out much cleaner. Enough to make me happy.
If you see I started the thread called "Synchros???" I have a similar problem and changed the tranny fluid using Redline 75W90 without success.

Please give me more details in the flush procedure you did, like acetone concentration, quantity, etc. It's the last thing I can do just before dropping the tranny and going the hard way.

the redline stuff is gl-4, the manual specifies gl-5...pretty sure that's significant .

I started getting the 4th gear grind at a Thunderhill track day on Friday and was considering talking it in to the dealer to get the syncros looked at. I would much rather take care of it myself by changing the fluid instead of letting them tear my '05 apart.

Car has 20k miles on it and I have changed the fluid once about 5k miles ago using Valvoline 75w90.

I tried the valvoline, and didn't care for it.

Why not try adding a little more friction modifier? Just add a little more each time till the grinding goes away for good.

Motul Gear 300 helped quite a bit with smoothing out all the shifts...even when cold. The 4th gear grind is still here so I'm going to take it in to the dealer for work under warranty

Any advice on having the dealer (Santa Cruz Subaru) do a tranny repair???

Things for the dealer to replace while in there?? Maybe upgrade the clutch to something else?

Things to watch out for???

Thanks

Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 here too....works like butter....def felt a difference from the stock crap to this. Shifting is a lot easier now!

Tip: Add in 4 qts of Amsoil Severe Gear 75W90 and you will be just about over the FILL LINE. Perfect everytime.

Anyone have experience with commonly available synthetic oils like Mobil 1 75W90 or Valvoline 75W90 Synpower? These meet all the required specs and are available off the shelf. Might be very good options compared to the more exotic snake oils discussed so far.

+1 for Amsoil SVG 75 90.

After initially overfilling the trans, shifting was tougher then before. I was at first a little annoyed at the results but realized later on it was my own fault. I drained out about 1/2 a quart and the difference was night and day. Shifting is so smooth now.
