Been running the Motul fluid for about 2000 miles. Today was the first really hot day that I did a lot of stop and go driving, lots of upshifting and downshifting. Usually the shifter feels pretty good going into gear, a little more effort but I can account that to all of my Kartboy/TiC bushings.
Anyway, today it was actually uncomfortable to shift once the car got warm. It took way too much effort and felt very notchy going into gear. I thought it was supposed to feel better once warmed up, not worse?
My levels are spot on, at the F when warm.
I'm wondering if I need to apply some more grease to my bushings.

Any ideas?

Just a note: Synchromesh = BAD for our transmissions. It likes to eat brass. And guess what our synchros are made of?

yes on grease. Also check the torque on the crossbolt for the pivot. Torque it to feel. If you go too tight it feels yucky.

I've noticed kinda same thing...

I don't recall if I posted this 2nd gear issue on nasioc and i dont think it has somthing to do with grease on bushings. surely all greased up pretty well now anyways. I am not sure if this has something to do w/ motul 300 either. thats why I posted here to see if anybody has similar issue.

Not to hijack, but I did some research today.

The STi manual calls for a GL-5, 75W-90 fluid per the manuall.

2004 Subaru Impreza WRX STi

I hear many people using many different things in there: RedLine MTL, RedLine MT-90, RedLine Shockproof, Motul 300 Gear, Valvoline. We need to make sense out of all this stuff.

I went on RedLine's homepage and started reading about each of their gear products. They divide them into 2 sections: Gear Oil and Manual Transmission Lubricant.

RedLine Gear Oil [

75W-90 For most light cars and trucks, for conventional and limited slip diffs, contains friction modifiers, EXCEEDS GL-5[/b]

75W-90 NS Same as above, but DOES NOT CONTAIN FRICTION MODIFIER! GL-5 ratings.

Shockproof Gear Oil No mentioning of GL-5, does say it's recommanded for "heavily loaded transmissions and diffs".

RedLine Manual Transmission Lubricant[

MTL GL-4 70W-80. I use this in my Acura.

MT-90 GL-4 75W-90 slightly heavier than MTL.

75W-90 NS Same as the last one I mentioned, even the description is the same.

Based on the factory manual, GL-4 fluids SHOULD NOT BE USED.

I called Santa Cruz Subaru and the guy raved about RedLine MT-90 he recommands to all of his MT customers.

Now for the Motul 300 Gear:

Both GL-4 and GL-5, 75W-90 full synthetic, multigrade.

In conclusion, I think the Santa Cruz Rep is wrong and I would personally use something that contains the wording 75W-90 GL-5. This is what scares me with the dealerships, everyone use something different and you never know what you are going to end up with.

Motul 300 gear is in, 4.1L just like the manual says.

Transmission feels very good, a lot less notchy.

I'm going to test this overtime and see how things go, so far so good.

Once it starts soaking into your syncros it will feel a lot better more and more.

Yea the STi tranny/shifter is pretty notchy/rough, but it feels pretty decent with the motul 300 in

Part of the problem is that there are many GL-5 lubes out there that while they meet the specs of a GL-5 absolutely suck in the scooby tranny.
