I wonder why changing the fluid in the sti tranny, with 75w90 valvoline that was already in it causes so many issues?
Or do all sti's use the S fluid? I called a local dealership and they said it was just normal bone oil.

Well I just switched to Motul 300 in the trans and what a difference. I drained out the Amsoil I had in there for only 4k miles. Before that I had Valvoline dino for 20k miles with no issues and figured I would try Amsoil since I like their engine oil and after I read some good reviews of it. Well right after I put Amsoil in I had a 4th gear grind and an occasional 5th gear grind and it did not like to downshift to 2nd gear. I put Motul 300 in and what a huge difference. No more grinds in any gear and downshifting is like butter.

Still using OEM... still shifts like new.

Take OEM fluid to the track and see how "smooth" it will be after a few sessions in the summer. Hence the reason why I switched. I just need something more hardcore than the Amsoil. Motul is what I am going to use now!

I have been there and done that. In fact, I'm still running the same fluid I ran last Summer when I did a track day on a 115 degree day here in Alabama. Before I changed the fluid that the car came with from the factory I had many, many autocrosses and a few track days on it and it still felt fine, just a tad stiff after three years and some hard use.

If you enjoy running your car really hard on extremely hot days you may wish to consider hooking a fluid cooler up to your gearbox. If you're actually cooking the OEM fluid I'm sure you'll cook the Motul as well, and I'm not entirely convinced that you actually cooked the Amsoil. It may have not played well with the gearbox in the first place.

Hi Everyone
Great forum, I was really looking for that sort of information.

After the last visit to the dealer (tranny fluid changed), ALL the gears started grinding after the engine/tranny get hot (like 20 min in bumper to bumper traffic). When engaging first gear, it would sometimes kick the shift lever back to neutral real bad.

Went to the dealer twice - first time they tricked me into changing the clutch (i'm usually not THAT stupid, but well, sh%t happens, I guess I wasn't thinking that day ), took it out of the dealer - same ol same ol. Then I drove it back to the dealer a few months later (I live in NYC, finding time to do anything at all is really not easy), and insisted on having the tranny fluid changed.
They found that the level was low, changed the fluid - well, it is better now, I agree, BUT, when really hot, it starts all over again.

Now I would wonder how did they manage to put a low level of low quality oil twice (the problems started after the first tranny fluid change), and to do the same thing after refilling the tranny after the clutch change.

In short - does this oil discussion apply to 6MT trannies only ? Mine is a regular 2002 WRX 5MT. Or will my tranny work with the same oil as the 6MT ?

Thanks in advance

Just read all 18 pages. Very good stuff. Also just ordered 5 quarts of 300 from TIC. Thanks to all for the advice and comments.

If you have the rear spline plug (otherwise known as the butt plug, and I am not making this up) then you don't need to drain the tranny when you drop it.

Thanks !
That would mean that they didn't even touch the tranny fluid when they changed the clutch. Then the guy looked me in the eye and said "yes of course, we changed it". Really professional...
I guess my next question is who can I trust to service my car in the future (NY-Queens area)

2 years old and only 5,625 miles clocked.

Im using Motul Gear300 for the tranny, resolved a 3rd gear mild grind issue prior to oil change.

For the rear diff: I would suggest you guys take a look at using Motul Gear FF-LSD Type 2 rather than the PA90, specs suggest a multigrade LSD oil and Gear FF meets the requirements.

I have changed the stock fluid at 30k to the Valvoline cheap stuff and have had no issues tracking or DD my car. I put 60k on my ride now. However, the STi tranny does feel hard to shift since I bought this car, no different. I don't hear no grinding but maybe that is because my radio is always up to hide the 50 other rattles. At the track I never had issues. For the diff I use the stock Subby stuff and I guess its working fine. No complaints here.

Hey,

Guys I have and 06 STI and I changed the tranny (w/ Motul Gear300) & diff fluid @ 26k since like at 25k my 2nd began (when I was racing it) to grind and sometimes downshifting to 5th was not easy. Now shifting, downshifting everything feels like butter but sometimes my 2nd still grinds when I shift at like 6,100 RPM.

Any advice? Or recomendation? Maybe the syncro is a bit hurt?

Thanks,
D

Im running the SVG currently, my order of 300V is on the way. I'll give my honest review of both, the SVG has been in for roughly 15k.

You guys with grinding issues might want to try out some auto-rx....
