Question Any 6 puck Clutch owners?

I plan on getting the ACT 6 puck race clutch and pressure plate set up in 2 months. I've been told that it is a little harsh when engaging gears and for a daily driver, it may not be the right way to go.

The only reason I'm going with this clutch is that I don't know how much power I'm going to want out of my car yet. 400,500,600hp to the crank or wheels. I don't want to sell myself short by going with like a street clutch instead of a race clutch.

If you have this set up now, have had it in the past, or know someone who has it now and have experienced it yourself, can you tell me how it really is before I decide on it?

Thanks for stopping by.

I've had that setup in my RX7. One thing to remember is that it is unsprung clutch that you are not supposed to slip that much. Basically, on & off. It can get a little harsh in stop-and-go traffic. But, if your daily commute doesn't involve such traffic, then you should be okay.

Well until my new motor popped I drove just over 1k miles on my act 6-puck with their extreme pressure plate (the stiffest one they make for the STi) and it was perfectly streetable. I started on some of the worst hills around without a problem. Once some heat got in it and it got grabby there was some clutch chatter on take off but nothing that compromised the driveability. I went through rush hour traffic with it no problem either. I dont think it will be a problem for you as long as you dont mind adjusting your driving style some.

definitely will have to adjust your driving. Especially if you go with a flyhweel as light as the prolite, like I have. There is some clutch/flywheel shudder on take offs. After the clutch gets good and warm, most of this goes away. Clutch chatter is prevalent, especially in 4-6th gears. I drive daily and love it. There are some times that it can get annoying - mostly in stop and go type traffic. However, i'll take the clutch anyday as the pluses definitely outweigh the minuses. It grabs hard, and if you don't shift well it feels like you are going to drop your rear end on the street =)

And remember right now I'm only stage 1 with some other lightening goodies - so if I can drive, any sti can drive it.

I had a 4 puck in my Honda with an extreme pressure plate and Prolite and I was able to slip it like stock... in fact, after I got used to it, I could drive it with my grandma in the car and she wouldn't know I had a 4 puck in there... could slip it just like the stocker.. I could even "drag slip launch" the car...

However, when I put a 4 puck in my 02 WRX, no matter what I did, I could not properly slip the clutch without hearing a HUGE CLANK sound from the engine bay... I was a noob with Subarus back then, but thinking back, I think the dealer that I had install it f$cked up the install... it sounded like a loose engine mount or something... they denied denied denied... said it was the clutch... back then, I was probably the first person to have a puck clutch in an Impreza in North America... I say that with confidence because I preordered my WRX and was one of the first in North America to take delivery in early 2001... I then "purposely" killed my stock clutch in 17,000 kms to give me an excuse to "upgrade"... I eventually went to a street disc with my local trusted shop doing the install... and all was fine... fast forward 5 years later when I got my STI...

I now hear of all these people daily driving 6 puck clutches and I definitely think the dealer messed up the install... so I want to get a 6 puck again... the ACT 6 puck tends to wear away at the pressure plate and flywheel... I used to have this RPS prototype kevlar clutch from WAYYY back in 1996... and it literally lasted forever... didn't wear the PP, didn't wear the flywheel, and barely wore itself.. so.... that being said, what are my options for 6 puck discs that don't "grind away" at the PP and flywheel?

the act clutches i have never had a problem with. they are the only ones i've run as a puck clutch - i've also used centerforce dual friction clutches in the past and love those as a purely street clutch. don't know of any other six puck clutches that would work well

Well Bruce Chapman is running some sort of RPS... I will have to ask him.

The ACT is nice, but one thing I found is that the release bearing they sell (essentially a stock one) gets squeaky really quick if you're hard on the clutch... the added clamping of the upgraded pressure plate is really hard on the release bearing... I wonder if anybody sells an upgraded release bearing? It doesn't take long for the stock one to make annoying sounds... and yes, everything was greased properly .

The heavy duty is all that is available for our STI's... but even the heavy duty is hard on it.

Like others said, I don't think it would be a problem, but you will have to change your driving style a bit.

Ive driven Kitsunes car....Whoa..

I wouldn't recommend a 6 puck unless you have like 600ft/lbs. Its WAAAY over kill. But no there wont be any problems except for harsh engagement...
