I'm curious about something. I've read here (and elsewhere) that a lot of STi's are burning oil. My STi burns none so far, and I'm at 7k miles. I was wondering if there is a connection between the way the car has been broken in and how much oil it burns (if any).

If your "break-in vs. oil burning" option is not covered below, please post your story!

Also post if you are running synthetic or non-synthetic.

Mobil 1 at first scheduled oil change. Wide rpm range beating the car it the dirt and gravel, no oil consumption @ 5802miles. Thats really too soon to tell anyhow. --Sin52

Mobil 1 at 500 miles. I burned about a quart for the first 3k miles and 1/2 quart for the next 3k miles. The dipstick level has not moved in the last 2500 miles.

I'd say it has just as much to do with the type of driving you do as well as the way you drive. Someone had an analysis done by blackstone on nasioc recently and it showed that the engine was still breaking in at 10k miles. My friend's 2.0 WRX burned a little oil up to 10k miles and then it stabilized. I don't think we can draw any conclusions until people have more miles on the block. Of course there are extreme cases though. One guy claimed that he was burning 1 qt every 1k miles - that is NOT normal IMO.

Burned about 1 qt in first 3k (stock dino topped off with syntec 5w30), burned about 1 qt in the next 4300 miles (M1 5w30). Every car I've had has burnt oil during the first 5-10k miles.

Default Motul Gear 300 transmission oil

Broke in by the specs, easy til 1000mi, then gradually increased max shift point.

I burned about a little over a quart with the factory dino oil. Switched to synthetic Mobil 1 5W-30 at 2800mi, and no oil burning thereafter...

How about a poll on grade types? Stay 5W-30, or 10W-30? Not exposed to extreme cold/hot climate conditions. I've heard people say that 5W-30 is too thin? Any thoughts?

I'm at 2411 miles and had to add a quart. Did the normal 1k break-in, and redlined her maybe twice after that. Topped it off with Mobile 1 5w-30. so far so good. havent changed her oil yet.

Scared me for a minute but i guess its pretty normal.

I'm at 6500. At 4500 I switched to Mobil 1. The guy overfilled it by 1/4 quart. He told me about it when I picked upt the car. We expected it would burn/blow off. 2000 miles later its still there.

search my posts for my thoughts on brake in. Bottom line. Short, high powered runs followed by easy cool down from DAY 1. Then progressively more prolonged stress (revs AND boost) followed by progressively shorter cool down.

Don
