I'm at 630 miles right now and I've only accidently went up to 4500 once, all the other times I've never acclerated past 4000rpm. However I do drive on the highway at constant speeds.... is it really that bad for the car?

And also, during those constant speeds I've went up to 80mph. My dad just told me when breaking the car in I should never go faster than 65mph. Is that bad too?

I'm pretty freaked out now, I know it won't kill the car, but I don't want my car to not perform at it's max because of my bad break-in.

ran dino oil until 3.5k, then Mobil1 changed oil at 800miles to get the beak in oil out, then the dino, now Mobil1. No burning, beat on it from day one as the Subaru engineers intended, not how the accountants who cover warranty costs.

I thought those of you that answered "beat on it from day 1" were just joking.

I mean normally if you replace a clutch you would need to do easy city driving for about 500 miles to break it in. If you go WOT right away you graze the (disk, pressureplate, flywheel...forgot which one it was) and the clutch will slip. So i'd figure even IF the motor doesn't need breaking in at least the clutch does. You guys are crazy

so basically could someone give me the best method of breaking in a STI?, at this point it seems for 1k drive and shift under 4k rpms and after that be free ? does it matter how soon i do the first oil change? ......and also, how constantly do i have to keep checking the oil?...

I wish somebody had told me this earlier. All I read on here prevoiusly was people stressing to NOT go over 4k for the first 1000 miles. But nobody mentioned to not drive at a constant speed for a long time. I just did a lot of research online, and I found out that the best way to break-into the car is to do pulls up to 6k, and letting off throttle letting the car slow down by itself while in gear, and change the oil right away after about 50 miles. DO NOT change to synthetic for the first few thousand miles. A lot of people said that by babying the car, the car will not make nearly as much power as it normally would. The purpose of doing bursts of hard pulls is to expand the pistons and make the rings seat better. And people said with new cars these days break-in is a matter of doing a few pulls and a quick oil/filter change.

I think that for people that are burning oil their car wasn't broken in properly. With leaky piston rings, the car won't produce nearly as much power, decreased longevity.... hence the oil burning. Scary thing is the only way to save this is to take apart the whole engine and get the walls rehoned.

Seems like NHLUHR did the correct break-in. And I previously thought he was crazy for what he did haha Now I wish I could go back in time and do a correct break-in. What worries me the most is I drove on the highway at the same speed for nearly 30 minutes several times when it only had 200 miles on the odo. Now I'm kicking myself in the ass for it.

SO I WILL STRESS ONE THING TO YOU GUYS..... DRIVE IT HARD OR SOFT.... MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT DRIVE ON THE HIGHWAY AT A CONSTANT SPEED, IF YOU HAVE TO DO SHORT BURSTS AND VARY YOUR RPMS.

Read nhluhr's post on top of this page.... do exactly what he did. If I were to do it all over again that's the way I would do it.

All I can say is that I consulted with a former Prodrive head engineer and he said that there is nothing to worry about. If the engine is put together properly it will handle it as long as you let it warm up properly. Also I did properly bed in the brakes and clutch. Those items require their own break in but this thread was about engine break in and oil consumption, which I have zero burning, so beating on it from day one is not that big of a risk IMO, and is a LOT more fun than babying it

Mobil 1 5-30 with a Mobil 1 filter since the first oil change. Used about .5 quart for first couple oil changes (I change oil every 2k). Have had no further oil use past the 6k change.
