I've read posts about people having trouble shifting into 1st/2nd when the trans is cold...i do too, and had the same problem with my rsx-s...so no surprise.

but occasionally it happens when the car is warmed up also. i have to really force the shifter into gear sometimes. it happens mainly into 1st or 2nd, though i couldn't get it into 3rd one time. double clutching doesn't help...i haven't tried rev matching yet, but i will as a last resort before switching tranny fluid or complaining to the dealer. only 1400 miles on this car...this happened the 2nd day i drove it.

on a side note. is it possible to shift quickly in this thing? even on the higher gears, i can take it out of gear quickly, but there is resistance going into the next gear. if i nudge it against the 'gate' it will slip in after a moment. i realize this is no honda transmission but i would hope you should be able to shift quickly without slamming into gear...? tia

it is possible to shift quickly, but shift fast, but smoothly. as for having trouble shifting to 2nd, sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesnt for me, but lately it hasn't been happening. i guess i am getting use to how to shift on a more notchy gearbox then a smoothe one. its hard to say what is right and what is not right because cars are mass produced and not every single car has the same problem.

You're absolutely correct ; This is no HONDA tranny IM iss my '00 Civic Si's silky smooth shifts.

the hardest one for me is 2nd. 3rd and 4th being the silkiest ones to follow

hmm ive got around 1200 miles or so on mine and have yet to notice any difficulty with shifting, of course it is "notchier" than the 95 civic I use to drive, but much much much shorter throws and ability to shift very fast when I feel like it.

lol, honda... My GF has a old (96?) Civic. I swear, I don't have to use the clutch in that thing! It just shifts no matter what! I had an Integra before the STI and it's could shift very smoothly, but was pick about the engage. you hit it wrong and it would grind on ya.

okay...so i guess the moral is, get used to the car
on a positive note...driving home this evening shifting gears was easy...few problems getting into lower gears (except 1st for which i have to be almost at a stop for ;x ... maybe rev matching would help somewhat). still can't shift smoothly, quickly, but hopefully that'll change.

love the looks this car gets!

thanks

I've always thought the STi tranny felt real nice... and I have no problem shifting it very quickly.

I agree with DrE. It's not Honda smooth, but the action is just fine. The synchros on first and second are sticky for a few miles when cold, but that's really not much of a problem. Reverse synchronizes faster than any transmission I've ever used.

sorry to respond again, but i must agree with the quick reverse shifting. it's always been immediate engagement, no resistance, never had that luxury on other cars i've driven (03 RSX, 96 integra, 94 civic).

That's good to hear.... I hate poorly/unsynchronized reverse gears.... I cant stand coming to a *complete* stop before shifting into reverse....

I have noticed that the car has to be pretty much at a dead stop in order to get it into first. A lot of my "rolling stops" at stop signs are done in second as a result. This is nothing new, my '00 RS Coupe did the same thing so it doesn't appear to be mileage dependant.

What is much nicer now is that cold clutch shudder I got in the RS appears to have been cured. Or at least, I don't get it.

Default STi Front lip options ---POLL---

Have you guys ever driven a Wrx? Because the STi is so much better! I used to own a WRX and now an STI and I don't have any problem shifting into any gear! The WRX is a ***** to learn on and once you master that the STi is cake(IMO). When you want to shift fast have it floored then take your foot off the pedel as you step on the clutch and then as you are in gear and ready to release the clutch give the gas the same time you release the clutch but when you fell it grab hold the clutch pedel in that same place for a sec the release all the way! I have butter smoothe shifts all the time! This must be the first WRX/STi you guys have droven!!

I would not be concerned that there is a problem with your car. The 1-2 is always going to be difficult when the trans is cold. This trans uses a triple cone syncro and I believe they are carbon synchros. Carbon syncros are designed specifically for heat. They are used because their properties do not break down at high temps like other materials. They are not meant for cold shifting.
You have a difficult shift to third? Are you pushing the clutch in the entire way? You should not need to double clutch or rev match when shifting up, down yes but not up. Your trans is well capable of handling upshifts without rev matching.
The dealer is going to tell you the same thing. Well maybe he will give you a line and hold your car in the garage fgor a couple days. He may act like he did something when he didn't even touch it except to take it out for joy rides.

That may make your shifts smoother but it's gonna be hell on your clutch after a while....
