Default Rattle/grind, comming from clutch?

Hey guys,

Ever since I picked up the car I have noticed a noise when its cold. It started off as a very slight rattle just after the car was started in the morning. After driving a short distance it would be gone. Over time it has been getting louder, and now that its cold out (25-30 most mornings) it is a lot louder, and is starting to sound like a slight grind. It stops when the clutch is pushed in, and it only happens when the car is cold. This is with dccd in auto, I have 15k on the car, just changed to valvoline 75-w90 yesterday, no change.

Any ideas what it might be? I’m probably going to end up making a trip to the dealership, but I won’t be able to get there for about a week due to projects and finals I have coming up.

Cliff notes:
Rattle / starting to sound like a slight grind
-Only when car is cold
-Stops when clutch is pushed in
-Stops after driving a short distance
-DCCD auto, 15k miles
-Just switched to Valvoline 75-w90 yesterday…. No change.

Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
Chris

u sure its nothing moving around in the car? clutch shouldnt be making a noise when its not engaged... your under warranty go get it checked but remember the clutch is wear and tear i believe so i dont htink theyll necessarily cover it

yeah its somewhere under the hood / tranny area. Another problem is I can never get under the car when its cold, so I cant check to see ifs just something rattling. The garage where I keep my tools is 45mins away, so the car is always warm by the time I get there.

I guess I’ll just take it easy, and bring it in after my finals

A lot of cars with a high mileage tranny do it. 1. It can be the throw out bearing. Or. 2. Input shaft bearing.

My brand new 3 weeks old '07 Limited has been making noise since day one.

I can still doing research on this as well, to see if this is a common STI noise.

I am planning on changing the stock tranny fluid with Redline Gear Oil to see if it can reduce the noise.

If it was the throwout bearing he would have the noise with the pedal to the floor. The throwout bearing is not engaged when when the clutch is engaged...so its not that.

Thought this was rare - guess not.

Same exact thing here as well. Was fine for about 20K miles. Always took care of the car, reg maintenance, currently I have some serious tranny rattle/whine as if its ice cold outside and it is starting to be pretty consistent - even when warm. It was essentially non-existent for 19500 miles and then all of a sudden, its always rattling/whining - same exact sound as if it was ice cold outside. It sounds just like a tranny that is rattling, whining until its warmed up during a really cold winter day in upstate Michigan.

Never had a car that just consistently did that even after completely warmed up in 60 degree F SoCal weather.

A little concerned about this. Sometimes - suddenly, it will stop the whining. Too bad that is a minority of the time.

Not an STI, but a 2006 WRX and I have the same problem as Bickford. The dealership replaced the throw out and input shaft bearings.(at least that's what the workorder shows) Problem is, it did absolutely nothing, the noise is still there when it's cold outside. I can't believe they can't diagnose a problem properly.

If you find out what the real problem is, please post the solution. I don't think I had one good dealership experience yet.
