Default the issues keep mounting...

Going through a full brake change right now, so all of my money is tied up in that.

But just in the last day or so, I have been having serious clutch slippage in third through sixth gears. It was really noticeable this morning at about 7:00 while I was driving to work. Granted its only about 10-15 degrees out and the car has never been in this low of temps, but this couldn't be it? I could smell some clutch but nothing incredible.

I have 44,XXX miles and have only launched my car maybe a half dozen times. No autox or drag racing. Is this normal? If it is, this seems unreal. Needing a new clutch at this low of miles without hard use doesn't make sense.

SLipping the clutch on our cars only takes one good one and thats it. So if early on you were doing hard launches slipping the clutch, I bet that was the cause. I have talked with a few SOA guys about this and they all agree that the stock STI clutches are not made to take any abuse. Sounds like you got more miles than some that have posted. I would say if you can, when you go to replace it, put a RPS streetmaster in with an STI flywheel and feel the difference!!

thinking more about the act 6 puck and prolite flywheel (it spools fast - had one in my last car).

How long do I have before I can't drive with this problem? Is there anything I can do to help prolong the life of the clutch until a new one comes in and gets installed?

ordered through import image - and shipping today! wow great price too - went with the act 6 puck and prolite flywheel.

Only question still remaining - how long will I probably be able to drive with this problem? ?? ?

First off, this is my situation and possibly no one else's:

I also had slippage in cold weather in 5th and 6th. Two people's comment about "clutch disc glazing" prompted me to think about wear patterns and how I might be able to reduce the glazing. See, as my car has 35,000 on it and has never been autocrossed or launched hard, I had my doubts as to whether the clutch was actually "worn out."

Notable: I always match revs when downshifting on the street. Let's call it a force of habit from my roadracing days.

So, what I did was start downshifting without matching revs. Just slowly letting the clutch out with zero throttle when downshifting. Four days later (and in colder weather than before) I have zero slippage in higher gears.

Will it work like that for long? Who knows. But with the cost of clutch/flywheel/pressure plate, I'm willing to wait it out a bit more.

YMMV, but it's worth a shot.

Tempature shouldn't be an issue. I've driven in -20C and haven't had any slippage issues; definitely a little chatter on startup but no slippage.

i'll give anything a try - just need to put about 175 miles on the car before the clutch arrives and i can drop it off at the dealership. Most of its highway, but who knows how the car is going to act. Still hoping it holds up for awhile.
