| Grassroots STI Racer | A clutch "kit" will and should come with a new pressure plate, disk or puck clutch, throw-out bearing and in some cases a new pilot bearing. The pilot bearing is not necessary unless it is catching and does not have a smooth travel. The pilot bearing goes in the flywheel. You have a couple of options for the flywheel. You can have your stock flywheel resurfaced to reuse it, typically you can resurface a flywheel 2-3 times. For reference our flywheels are two step. This means that there are two surfaces at different levels, both need resurfacing. The raised step is the portion of the flywheel that the the pressure plate attaches to. The second step, the lower step, is the portion that the clutch comes in contact with. The other option for the flywheel is to buy a lightened one. There are many options for weights. The advantage of the resurfaced flywheel is that it will drive more closely to stock. The lightened flywheel will have less rotational mass making the car seem to rev faster...not necessarily making the car faster. If you go resurfaced makes sure that the place that does it balances it also, but that should be included. It can cost anywhere from $100-$125 to be resurfaced, definitely a cheaper route than lightened. You should be good with a disk clutch with a higher strength pressure plate. The strength of the pressure plate will dictate how much power the clutch will be able to hold. There are a bunch of people here with puck clutches that are very happy and they are not something to rule out, but are usually less daily driving friendly. |

IWSTI Addict since: Nov 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | it all depends on how much you want to spend the ACT streetlite clutch can hold about 475ft/lb of torque its about $550 the torque of the engine is what kills a clutch...and thats flywheel torque ofcourse not wheel torque. It sounds like you're goin over this, so that might not be the best, but its cheap, and im sure it'd last alot longer then the stocker. As far as the rating, if you're at say, 500, im sure it'd be just fine, but say, 100ft/lbs over the rating would be a different story. It also depends on how u drive your car too. Are you planning on draggin it alot, launching, etc? or are u just into daily driving/autox? Im probably goin with the act, basically because my only other choice would the the exedy twin plate, but thats about 1800 bux after taxes. for that, i'll be gettin a better cluch, and have money for a carbon driveshaft. Also, it all depends on how much u wanna, or can spend. oh yea, im running about 450ft/lbs of torque right now on my stock clutch @ 25k....still holding up, but i dont launch my car...Reguardless, it'll go sooner then later, so ill be upgrading aswell |

| A.X.D. | look at RPS clutches... they are the best ones for the STi in my opinion... after feeling the clutch in Bruce Chapman's car and knowing that it would be able to hold the insane power on his monster, i got one for my car as well. the pedal feel is almost identical to stock (no one would be able to tell if you said nothing) and the performance is just incredible. |

IWSTI Addict since: Apr 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I just had my stock clutch replaced with the ACT clutch. I am very happy with it. It's barely more (money) than a stock Subaru clutch. My car isn't stock (FD Red Turbo, plus everything replaced that needed to make that power mod work well). I also had a lightweight flywheel put in at the same time as the clutch, because I only had to pay for the part. The labor was in the clutch. I don't work on my car, but I take it to the right places. Somebody who knows STI's. In Los Angeles it's DC Performance (they are partners with ESX, to do the mods on street cars, so ESX could concentrate on just their race cars.) I am very happy with this car and the mods! |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2006 Trader Rating: (0) | The pro's behind TILTON... Tilton clutches have a hydraulic bearing. Tilton clutches are push type instead of pull style like the others, higher clamping loads. They don't rate their clutches at the point at which they start slipping but, at the point at which it will hold the power all day long. Also, you will have stock pedal feel. If you are serious about using and abusing your clutch this is where it is at. Call around and ask some tuners then mention Tilton and i'm sure they will agree. One scary point is that your clutch will no longer be the transmissions weakest point and you may break other parts. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2004 Trader Rating: (2) | I like my sprung 6 puct from ACT. it was around $500 and can take loads of abuse. If you do get a clutch make sure the disks are sprung, the engagement is alot better than unsprung. |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2004 Trader Rating: (3) | an act 6 puck will do just fine. I actually prefer the unsprung, will hold more power and the engagement is very nice. I have driven a few sti's with act clutches and they are a great bang for the buck. I have a stock sti clutch for sale! less than 1000 miles and was never launched, $175 shipped. It came out of my friends 07 Limited STi last week. |
