I know this is almost a month ago, but what exactly is the "open" setting on the dccd?

In really heavy downpours on the highway or in any snow conditions I'll lock it up. Otherwise, I leave it in auto all the time.

The open setting is 65% rear 35% front (for 04/05. It's different on the 06+).

It means you can do burnouts and get wicked power oversteer (mad dorifto).

In the rain I like to put more power to the front wheels than the back.

So, then on the dial, it would be set to the very bottom, middle, or just under lock?

If Im wrong, correct me but I dont think I am. The center diff is mechanically set at 35%f/65%r for 04/05 and 49%f/51%r on 06+. The DCCD allows you to adjust the tension on the clutches in the center diff. Open will allow the clutches to slip (front OR rear). There is no way to change the torque split without changing the gearing. There is no way to put more power to the front wheels.

FWIW I run in auto because it changes the amount of lock on the fly and it works pretty well. Most people that I have seen report their fastest lap times in auto.

You are correct on both accounts. Lock is useful in deep snow when you need to get going. I find partial lock is useful for loosely packed snow as auto, at least on an 05, likes to get a little tail happy if you get a bit too aggressive.

This may explain why I'm getting a grinding sound from my center diff when I go above 65 in 5th or 6th. My drive by wire has been going off with my center diff dropping to 0 after about a min. My DCCD swich is remaining on and not allowing me to swap out of manual. Scheisse I remember it locking on asphalt at 85 before the swich went crazy.

There is little reason to be in anything other than auto except if:

-you are stuck in sand
-there is snow on the ground
-you are on a race track
-you are just screwing around

Full lock is for *very* slippery conditions where traction is at a premium. Unless you have grease on your tires rain does not qualify.
