I was thinking of going up to the bonnevile salt flats next month, and was wondering what the effects of running the car at 140 to 150 mph for long periods of time, say 10-15 minutes or more.
Will the STI be able to handle it, should i change the tires?

Im sure it will be ok, just wondering if there is anything i should know, i also want to go to some of the more empty highways around utah like highway 6.
thanks

check all your fluids before heading out and keep an eye on your temperture gauge to make sure you're not overheating. maybe even do an oil change before hitting the salt. definately talk to other "salt racers" to get thier opinions. Salt flats are so cool and i am envious.

I would probably want an oil temp gauge and/or oil pressure just because I am paranoid.

What are the temps going to be? You might consider running a different weight oil based on weather.

Default How to install strut tops?

Make sure your tires are pressurised appropriately beforehand.

You will be about 1500 rpm's shy of redline in 6th at that speed, so your motor should be fine, but you will hear a crazy howl after about 135, so don't freak out,

Ive heard about this howl but my car has never done that....let me explain this: I used to take it every now and then to 140 without hearing anything then one day from approx 117 to 125, more like 120, I started hearing a loud whinning noise comming from the rear right side of the car. Got home safely and inspected the rear right tire for a nail....YUP I had a nail in it. Next day I took care of that and just for expeimental purposes I drove between 115 and 130....whinning was still there....could it be an imperfection in the tires surface caused by the nail repair ???

thanks

Default Do 02-03 WRX strut bars fit 04 STi ?

Check out www.scta-bni.org

The people running the salt flats have VERY strict Rules.

Bin there, not done that. Do have a copy of the 2000 year rules and have read them...

Two things:

1) The car won't overheat - it'll run cooler than normal. As you pick up speed in higher gears the extra air flow to the engine more than compensates for the extra RPM the engine is pushing.

2) I already posted this in your other topic about tires, but you can't buy stock WRX tires - they're for 16 inch wheels, and the stockers on your STi are 17's.
