Default Longer gears?

I feel like I would enjoy my car more if it had longer gears and I'm wondering what my options are?

I drove an Evo 9MR today and I think it made me realize just how short our STi gears are, which may not necessarily be a bad thing, but for me personally I would like to have longer gearing, such as what the Evo 9 MR comes with.

Thanks in advance for the help

that cause boost kicks in later on the MR then in the STI so it feels like u have longer gears.

Sorry man, that's not it at all.
Boost kicks in later on my car than a EVO 9MR on a stock turbo.
Our gears are much shorter than the EVo's, but let's not get caught up on making this a STi vs Evo comparison.
I think we can all agree that the STi gears are extremely short and the more power you add, the shorter they seem to get

I couldnt agree with you more. I drove an Evo 9 MR about 2 weeks ago, and the boost response, if anything, is better on the Evo...so its not that.

I would love to have a stronger version of the 5 speed...

I think there has to be a fine balance. Our short gears are great for autox/rallyx and, depending on the course, road racing. If you want longer gears you could consider swapping to an 07 STi tranny, which has longer gears.

You've got to be careful though. A shorter gear generally means a higher torque multiplier which *should* equal greater acceleration. I think the problem is that you lose time accelerating with all the shifting (especially that 4-5) so it's a fine balance. With that said, I think the STi has enough torque over the rev range to support a taller gear.

How much of a difference are the 07 gears?
I mean would it be worth the time, effort, cost, etc.. or is it so little of a difference that it would be barely noticeable?

I think the STi is just right. It does have short lower gears, but the upper gears are plenty long for the highway. I think it is a good balance. One easy way to make a slight difference would be to get a set of wheels/tires with a larger overall diameter than stock. They could give noticably longer gears if they were enough taller. The only gear that I find annoyingly short in the STi is first.

Well 4th gear will truly be a difference. You'll be able to do the 1/4 mile for the most part without shifting into 5th.

That would be a beautiful thing
I hate having to shift into 5th at the end of the 1/4 mile.

get a ppg 6 spd dogbox. it has longer 1 - 4 and maintains the stock 5th and 6th gears. you end up with a 4th gear that is identical to 5th in ratio so you essentially have an sti with a 5 spd. that also means you're not shifting into 5th gear in the 1/4 mile, which is nice if drag racing is your thing.

particularly for upgraded turbo setups, the longer gears really let you take full advantage of the entire powerband.

something else that should be mentioned is the fact that the ppg gears are MUCH stronger than stock or RA gears for that matter. they are billet and will not break on you. the side by side comparisons are ridiculous.

there's a thread in the video collection sub forum right now where a member just had one installed in his sti.

Yea, I'm a fan of Burnin4's car
The dogbox gears are a little too extreme for me, especially on a daily driver
They definitly seem like they would be perfect for drag racing.
From what I understand they are very expensive.

What are some other options, guys?
So far I like the sounds of the 07 gears, but exactly which gears are different and how much different are they?
Thanks for the help so far

extreme? i wouldn't say they're extreme. just different. you'll get used to it very quickly. and, there's nothing as strong you can buy from subaru.

the cost is a little higher than an sti tranny, but well worth it, imo.
