i am still new to the sti, but i already think the gears are a little short. coming from the wrx 5mt, i like the fact that i get through the gears faster, but having that little extra in 4th seems like it would be really nice to have.

Doubtful... they usually charge by the hour. It would be better to find an overall price for the swap, then hourly charges with estimates.

Where would I be able to get the 07 gear set? I am guessing a Subaru Parts department or dealer, but where specifically?

My 5th gear synchro is going out and I want the longer gears and the carbon plated synchros that this trans has, as I have a 05 which has the crappy brass synchros and the large jump in gear ratio from 4th to 5th....some people speculate that this causes the synchronizer to work harder and wear easier/faster.

Sorry to burst your bubble but you could not be farther from the truth. I went from an 04 to an 07 and the gear change is more than subtle. 4th gear tops out at 115+ compared to a little below 100 in the 04. Daily drivability on the road has improved significantly given that you do not have to shift so many damn times. Do not get me wrong, i still love and miss my 04 I am just saying what the differences are and the truth is the gears are a huge change.

Does anyone know how much of a difference going to an overall larger tire/wheel combo makes? I'm sure it is slight but does anyone know for sure? 1-3 mph difference is what I would guess.

i don't mean to hijack this thread, but let's assume you install 07 tranny into your 04, 05, or 06 sti. let's also assume that your 04, 05 or 06 is AP stage 2 or beyond. wouldn't installing longer/taller gears throw off the AP tune?

FWIW;
older thread with some good info on the gear ratios

JDM 5th and 6th vs. USDM 5th and 6th *updated with the 07 ratio changes*!

So has anyone found out how much it would cost ballpark figure for the 07 4th gear swap into a 04-06 STi?
