Over my lunch break I shot over to XXtuning and had Jack, the head mechanic, change over all my fluids to synthetic (Amsoil).

I've got 6800 miles on the car.

I hung out the whole time as he meticulously worked on my car.

My rear differential fluid was extremely dark and sludgy. I highly recommend changing this at frequent intervals.

The front diff/tranny fluid requires the removal of two bolts to drain, but is refillable through the same spot-(took 4 quarts, iirc).

Engine oil capacity is less than the wrx by a small amount. How does that dinky-ass filter do good work? who knows.

Interestingly, the gas tank has two drain holes. take that crap gas out asap if need be.

Subaru makes some cool stuff.

Next stop: Perrin swaybar (they make them red for the STi, SS brake lines. Engine mgmt???

Take care, all

Yeager

All fluids were changed:

Rear Differential (exactly 1 quart of Amsoil synthetic 90 wt gear oil). Jack used an aerosol brake cleaner to really get all the build-up off of the rear diff gears. There were some small metal shavings on the magnet, but nothing to cringe about.

Front Diff(s) and Transmission: (4 quarts of Amsoil 90 wt synth). As above. after running the car on the lift for a minute, everything was well circulated and the level hit the F line on the dipstick perfectly.

Motor: 4+ quarts Amsoil synth for turbocharged cars.

Everything is buttery smooth now. Check you rear diff oil if you have some miles on your car...mine was completely opaque.

BTW, Danny put the STi shortshifter in the shop car. Makes powershifting possible. Jack gave it a double thumbs up.

cheers and happy friday!

hi yeager

did you use the exact same oil for the tranny and the differential and is there any shifter difference? is it smoother in any way?

yup same oil.

it is smoother, noticeably. The early morning cold still makes for some stiff shifting, but otherwise I am very pleased. Odd that after 6K miles I had to change the diff fluid. I hope more people do this to avoid any troubles.

Keep us posted on the long term effects. I am interested in using synthetic gear oils but I have read a lot of posts on different forums about people loving synthetic gear oil at first but later on they hate it. This is for WRXs though. I am still up in the air on what I am going to use this spring. Right now I am leaning towards regular dino gear oil.

I'll be doing this same thing shortly ...

I just put the Series 2000 0w30 in the engine ...

I'll be replacing the Tranny fluid with the series 2000 75w90 Gear Lube, and I will be putting the regular 75w90 Gear Lube in the rear diff ...

You can get all of these through amsoil directly .. just follow the link off of my site .....

http://www.need4speedpower.com/amsoil.html

Engine oil filter is SDF20 btw ...

(or, if you are local, I have most of it in stock at all times)
