Default Just switched Trans & Diff to Amsoil Synthetic

And couldn't be happier. I have used Amsoil synthetics in my race vehicles for years. Back when I had the RX7 in the early 80's, I changed the trans & diff to Amsoil, and picked up 8 mpg in the winter. Now that I have 7,500 on the STI, and winter is coming, I thought I'd do the changeover.

The Shifting is so much smoother it can't be believed. All the notchiness is gone, shifts with 2 fingers. I also know that the synthetic deals with heat much better than regular gear lube, and the syn poor to 60 f below zero.

Best investment I have made in the car.

I am glad you like it SO FAR. Everyone loves synthetic oil in the trans when they first put it in, I even noticed a positive difference when I put fresh dino oil in my trans, but let us know how it is 5k+ miles later. Problems usually come up after a while with synthetic in the trans, not within the first couple hundred miles.

Problems? What problems? I have used Amsoil in various transmissions and differentials for over 20 years. I have never had a problem.

I've had Synthetic in the engine at the 1K mile mark and in the diffs / tranny at the 30K mile mark. So far no problems. I just switched from Redline to Amsoil 2K miles ago at the 60K mark for everything and the tranny seems to shift alot smoother.

So you put in that severe gear that is in the link? How often are you supposed to change the tranny fluid on a 04 STI?

With Subaru trans some people experienced hard shifting, grinding, syncro issues, etc. with various synthetics in their trans after they put a few k miles on. I have not looked lately, but when I was thinking of doing my trans fluid change I did a lot of research on nasioc and other subaru forums, and read enough to where I just stuck with valvoline dino gear oil. Maybe you won't have issues and I hope you don't cause I like Amsoil motor oil and would not mind trying their gear oil, but for now I am sticking with Valvoline dino gear oil. Keep us posted on how things go.

I'd have to look in my owners manual for the exact mileage to do the changes, but I do it every 30K miles.

funny that you posted this two days ago, but i just took my car out for a drive after changing the tranny/front diff and rear diff fluids as well to Amsoil 75W-90 severe gear - it's still early to give full impressions, but i agree with your analysis. Amsoil is by far, in my opinion, the best synth fluid.

Does anyone known if Royal Purple work fine for transmission and diferentials? Or it is as bad as Red Line.

hmmm...thats strange because COBB highly recommends redline MT-90: "Great balance of friction and lubrication. This is a good choice for a street/auto-x car. Highly Recommended."
