So does Andrew@Andrewtech. He recommends 1qt Motul & the rest Redline in the trans. I used the Subaru lsd for the rear diff.

Ya know guys, this trhead was started just to give my opinion on a product that I have used since the very early eighty's. I have used Amsoil in everthing I have owned, including an air cooled super vee, a formula ford, and my Buell. I have tried other products, and have always come back to amsoil. I am not trying to convince anyone of anything, merely stating my convictions.

As I said in an earlier post, be careful from whom you are taking any advice. If you don't know their pedigree, they might just be spouting off something that one of their friends said, totally without the first hand experience to back it up.

All synthetics are not made equal. I for one, tried Mobile 1 back in the 1970's. Didn't like it then, don't like it now. Found something that works, and stuck with it.

I know from past experience the difference synthetic gear lube makes in drivability and performance (mileage) in the winter, therefore my change over prior to winter. If I lived in a hot climate, I still would have switched over to synthetic, because it does not break down in high heat.

Whatever oil or synthetic you use, just make sure it meets all the specifications Subaru calls for, and you can't go wrong.

By the way, I am NOT an Amsoil distributer, so I am not trying to do a sales job. I am, however, a very knowledgable driver, race car builder, mechanic, and nationally licensed SCCA Tech inspector, and probably have been doing this more years than some of you have been alive.

Which Amsoil did you use for the trans & Diff. I know that it was Amsoil Synthetic but what grade was it? I am going to change them next week.

I provided you with a link in the initial posting, but the 70/90 extreme

You don't need an LSD additive. Just use the proper fluid-Subaru OEM or Motul 90PA LS oil.

so far i only have the Amsoil 75W-90 (no additive) and i have heard no chatter. everything is perfect and the car feels much smoother, especially shifting.

Subaru released a TSB specifying that the STi must use a mechanical LSD oil in the rear diff, or damage can occur. Amsoil is fine for the trans, but I would use the proper stuff for the rear.

Did you bother to click on the link in my first post to read the specs on the oil before you made this comment, or read my other post that says amsoil does also have a lsd additive (althought I don't think it is necessary, given the specs to begin with).

So you have specific specifications requirement recommended?

Amsoil is a great product.

What I'm saying is that the rear diff oil is a special 90 weight mineral based oil for mechanical LSD's. It is not a normal gear oil. Amsoil doesn't make this type of product. The only stuff I've found that is compatible is the Motul, the OEM Subaru, and I believe Silkolene makes it also.

http://www.tunerworks.ca/products/?fn=detail&id=197

The Amsoil is 75W90 and since Subaru reccomends a straight 90 WT then I guess you're using the wrong stuff whether you use the additive or not.

And BTW I agree is Amsoil is a fantastic product. I've used the oil for years. And I use the Severe Gear in my Forester diff's.

also, just to let you know - when i went to my Subaru dealership to pick up the OE gear oil, they told me not to waste my money on it since it is just crappy gear oil they told me to get a nice synthetic oil that doesn't turn to garbage when it gets too hot.

has anyone been running the Amsoil Severe Gear 75W-90 for a good number of miles that can report back?
