Default Need an upgraded clutch, need suggestions please!!

I gained about 93wtq on my STi from the protune and other simple bolt ons.

It seems as though when I throw it in any gear, its alot rougher. Meaning, it seems you gotta yank it in gear. Especially when racing. Hell, yesterday it wouldnt even go into fourth.
Im assuming my stock clutch is about to go. I had been double clutching at the track every so often, and I'm assuming that probably did it (since I just learned to double clutch as well ).

I need a clutch that can hold torque, but isnt heavy as heck on the foot. I daily drive my 05' STi. Im thinking about going with the ACT street clutch. Ive read that messing with the stock flywheel actually may make it frail, and I dont want it to give up on me when I'm in traffic. So, with the ACT street clutch, will I need a new flywheel? If so, what kind?
And what are your thoughts on the ACT street clutch. Is it really hard to daily drive compared to the stock clutch, and will it alow for some slippage?

Thanks a ton.
Patrick

I have the ACT 6 puck. Don't let the puck design scare you. Before break in it's a pretty harsh engagement. Once you are used to it, it's as easy as the ACT street/strip that I had on my last car. You can slip the clutch a little and drive it normal. When you are tired after a hard days work and stuck in traffic it can be bothersome.

I have a Prostreet forged steel flywheel. 14.75 lbs. Not too light and I wanted forged steel for the durability aspect. I personally love the set up.

You can always go dual disk for easier engagement but your looking at some $$$ for those set ups.

whoa. I tried pushing down my friends 6-puck in his 95' Supra single turbo, and I dont think I can handle that as a daily driver. Thing felt like pushing an 80 pound weight!!

I had an RPS 6-puck clutch and ACT Prolite flywheel installed last week. Pedal pressure is only a little more than stock - it feels stock. The clutch grabs like crazy but can be modulated off the line like stock. No chatter. I've done 300 miles on it so far and I can drive it like it's any other car.

It's a little heavier than stock. It'll be different for every car. My street/strip was far worse on my Prelude than my 6 puck on my STi.

I have a similar clutch to the ACT disk. The clutch pedal is more stiff because the pressure plate is stronger, but that is about it. You really can't go wrong with a disk clutch for daily driving. With the RPS clutch that I bought there were options with how strong a pressure plate you could get. I am sure that is the same with ACT, but you would have to check because I don't know. The stronger your pressure plate the more power the clutch will be able to withstand and the firmer your pedal will feel.

As far as a flywheel goes the best thing to do is have your stock flywheel resurfaced. Lightened flywheels are fun and they make your far rev faster since there is less weight on the crank, but it is unnecessary and will get annoying.

ACT street clutch here. Feels great and is holding up to an additional ~100 ft lbs over stock. After reading these reviews, my next may be the 6 puck... though that tilton hydraulic throwout bearing setup looks supah-sweet.

Had a hyper-single before this and hated it btw.

Note: With a worn stock clutch and with a worn hyper-single I never had gear engagement issues though. You might have done something to the synchros. Have you ever changed the gear lube in the tranny? If you do, go with stock. I had some problems with Redline that smoothed out instantly after swapping back to stock fluids in the tranny and rear diff.

I'm having an ACT 6 puck and ACT streetlite flywheel (15 lbs vs stock 18 lbs) put in soon. I'll post reviews when it's done...

I've never heard a single bad review about an ACT 6 puck on the STi. My engine builder also recommended it so that finalized my decision.
