The 41/59 power split was done to better match the weight distribution of the car. As a result, the car has better balance, better turn-in, and less understeer than previous models. At least according to most of the magazines i've read.

I added cliff257's bit of info, thanks for that.

And I also spoke to someone last night who has successfully swapped a 2006 STi transmission into his 2002 WRX, ending any speculation to problems with a speed sensor or who knows what. Thanks to Gruppe-S for the false info there...
