I just received a bunch of new STI filters (152-080) and was surprised to see that they are much smaller than the '03 WRX I had. Being a 2.5 engine insted of a 2.0, I somehow expected them to be larger. Can anyone explain why?

They are actually the standard filter for the 2.0L as well now. They made them smaller to keep them away from the exhaust manifold. If you are under the car looking up at the filter, it is obvious why they made the change. Heated up oil/filter is never a great solution. I'm not sure what they changed internally, if anything.
