Question How can I tell if I have the factory short shifter?

How can you tell if the dealer has installed a OEM short shifter on the STi?

Pull up your shifter trim and shifter boot and check the color of the shifting assembly.

Gold rods = stock STi shifter (top in that pic)
Black/Green rods = factory STi short shifter (bottom in that pic)

Thanks, I was always curious about this myself... now if I could only find out if I have the OEM Shock Sensor... at a recent meet, I ran sideways into my alarm'ed car, and ...nothing.

Awesome information kts262! I've changed the original post's title and I'm going to add this to "Threads of Interest".

Cool!

I got the pic from bickford's Factory Short Shifter Install in the HowTo section. Here's a link: http://iwsti.com/forums/showthread.php?t=53968

I just replaced my '06 sti shifter with the kartboy unit and the orignal was the gold colored one.

There is an easy way to tell. The stock shifter on 06 has a black piece under the reverse lockout and the short shifter is silver.

Hmmm. You may be onto something. The picture a few posts up shows the same thing; stock is black, short shifter is silver. (The piece I'm talking about is the cone where the top of the shift boot goes.)

The color of the lever itself is also different in that picture; stock lever is gold, short shifter lever is black. Is that true for the '06 as well?

Yes the 06 is the same. I have a factory short shifter, and mine is Silver, and a friend of mine has the 06 with stock shifter with black piece.
