My car does that too. I took it to 4 different workshops, and they all had different opinions. But as soon as one guy heard it, he seemed certain it was the centre diff, and said many others had asked the same thing.
It's perfectly normal im told. Just another strange noise to add to the list.

yeah i was told its normal as well but the sound has been getting louder on my car lately. The way i see it is the STi is a rally car and it will be making noises as long as i dont have parts flying out of my car there is nothing to be afraid of.

Yeah, I've got a clunking sound too.. I mainly hear it when i'm in 1st gear with the clutch depressed...once i let go of the clutch I hear a sort of metalic clunking noise...I can even feel it in the clutch pedal.

exactly. ive heard difference ideas of what that might be since i got a little bit worried. But ive forked out too much money on trying to find out what the problem is, i thought it was the rear diff because the sound seemed to be coming from the rear at one point. but the more it happened the more i felt it in the center and just like u i felt it on my pedals as well. So i concluded along with some colleagues that it was the center diff. but as long as its doing its job im not going to worry to much.

You probably broke your motor mount, this is common with the 06's. also check all of your intercooler hoses you miight have popped one off.

It's not the motor mounts, i replaced them with the group N mounts, also replaced the pitch mount with a solid billet mount...IC hoses are fine.
