Default aluminum driveshaft from driveshaftshop

with the stoopit power level we will be bringing to englishtown, i want to do everything reasonable to make sure the stock tranny can handle the load. these one-piece aluminum driveshafts offer 4 times the torsional flex as the stock shaft, according to the manufacturer.
http://www.driveshaftshop.com/item156073.ctlg

i've been watching the the cf acpt units at a distance and based on the harmonic and other issues that have arisen, i'm not that impressed, not yet anyway. these aluminum shafts weigh 1 lb. less than the cf shafts and cost less than half the price of the cf units at $450.

if this shaft works out, it is a no brainer. cutn edg is in the perfect position (completely gutted and on the lift) for us to do the simple mods to the tunnel and floor pan that are required. i'll document the install when we get to it in the next week or so. i ordered it today directly from driveshaftshop.

Hey Bruce,

It is my understanding that these aluminum driveshafts from the driveshaft shop are too long and they have binding issues. Plus, they do require a modification to the floorboard for installation.

Do a search on Nabisco, you should be able to find some useful information regarding their shaft.

However, if you choose to purchase one, let us know how it turns out and what you think of the product.

Good luck,

Mike

i've been watching that thread with interest and have had a back and forth with dug-e-fresh. i posed his problem to driveshaftshop and this is their reply.

Hi
the only way the shaft will hit is if they have not cleared it, when the
shaft is sold its made clear the floor board need to be moved up in in a few
places. if they dont do it, then it hits we have sold about 350 of these w/o
issue.

doug acknowledged he may have had an installation issue and ordered another one. i decided to take a calculated risk based on the info at hand; to install it and watch it closely. we're brutally cutting, hammering and welding the floor boards into a different form anyway that might just as well accomodate the shaft (isfh).

Having the shaft hitting the floorboard because of improper clearancing by the installer is one thing. But Tom@Kartboy had purchased two of the shafts from driveshaft shop and had problems with binding, the shafts were too long.

An additional thread, this one is quite long.

To clarify misconceptions, the issues with the ACPT driveshaft have been completely worked out according to James at ACPT. I would love to do a dyno test of the aluminum and cf for comparison sake. My curiosity stems from the difference in torsional rigidity of cf v. aluminum. The carbon fiber ACPT driveshaft is being used on cars with 1000+ hp in Japan.

Any word on the aluminum one's dyno tests, real world results, etc would help identify the shaft that is truly best for enthusiasts.

If the aluminum manufacturer would be up for it, I think we can get HSPN to do an aluminum v. carbon fiber back to back dyno test. I know they have a dyno booked for a whole day in the next month or two to test some products.

Think they can supply one for the dyno duel? I know ACPT is willing to offer their driveshaft up for the test.

i think that kind of test offer to the driveshaftshop should come from you at hspn, nivek. if you want, phil will be dyno tuning cutn edg in md within the month. if i can keep the winning driveshaft when we're done we're all yours (isfh).

btw, i'm glad those issues were resolved. it was obvious that the people involved were doing everything possible to get it squared away. it's great they succeeded.

i love this internet stuff. i just swapped e-mails with tom. this discussion is taking place in real time.

as rdrcr said, tom had a problem with it locking into the output shaft of the tranny. he advises to check the length when we get it. the great thing is, if it dosen't fit...i will aquit and send it back - i'll still have the stock shaft.

Subscribed!!! I have been monitoring the CF driveshaft, and been reading up on this one. This seems to be the best one, since its cheaper, and 1lb lighter. But, it requires some modifications to the floor pan. Nothing a simple heavy hammer can't do. I wonder how this will work, def keep us posted Bruce! Its def worth it if it all goes well!

^^+1, this seems like a great part for the price if it works. Does anyone know how much whp the carbon fiber shaft adds on a Stg. 2? I'm too lazy to look through the long thread.

Well the theory is it adds 5%, so say your protuned to 300whp...15whp.

Clarification: It is not 15whp peak, it is 5% across the entire power band which is a lot better than 15 whp peak.
