| Spec C Club | According to: http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/031209/detu013_1.html The USDM STi engine has been selected one of the 10 Best Engines of 2004. An excerpt: Fuji Heavy Industries' Subaru arm earns its first spot on the Ward's 10 Best Engines list with its high-performance horizontally opposed "boxer" 4- cyl., which powers the critically acclaimed Subaru WRX STi. The turbocharged boxer engine delivers one of the highest horsepower-per-liter ratings of any engine available in the U.S., making it unusually powerful in relation to its size -- an attribute always appreciated by Ward's 10 Best Engines editor- judges. | Junior STI Driver | what happened was, mazda overrated the HP figures on the engine. They said it had something around 10 more hp than it really had, or some crud like that, and a bunch of people got pissed. IMO, who cares about the numbers, as long as its fast and fun to drive? If it was fast and fun before, why would it be any different now that you know it has 10 less hp than you though? What a bunch of whiners. Mazda offered the first couple thousand buyers (the ones who bought theirs before Mazda released the hp info) the choice to get a full refund for their car, or a ton of free oil changes (or something like that). most people took the free service of course. |

| Amateur STI Driver | I agree 10hp is not that big of a deal. What was a big deal was many of the guys who dynoed their car got only 175 to the wheels. One guy dynoed his car at the same dyno that I used to dyno my 02 RSX Type S. We both got 175 hp SAE corrected. Yeah, my 200hp rated car dynoed the same to the wheels as a 250hp rated car. Granted RWD cars tend to have more drivetrain losses but still doesn't explain such low dyno numbers. Compare it to another RWD car - the S2000 - rated at 240hp and puts down 200hp to the wheels. Mazda rerated the car to 238hp but I think it should be more like 220-225hp. I'd be pretty upset it that was the case. Upset enought to sell it back to Mazda. Dunno, there's not car that really replaces the RX8. Rear drive, seats 4 w/ 4 doors (sort of), sports car/luxury oriented, and priced at $30k. Good thing I have an STi and no worries about hp. |

IWSTI Addict since: Aug 2003 Trader Rating: (0) | I had an RX-8 for about 2 weeks and I took advantage of the buyback. And yes, you're right they re-rated it to about 238 hp, but most RX-8 owners believe it's somewhere closer to 210 hp. I was appalled and very disappointed in Mazda. And yes, my RX-8 had a problem with only 117 miles on it! It was a CEL thing. And even though that's not a huge deal, it's still rather disconcerting for a car that only had just over 100 miles on it. Let's just say I'm so very much happier with my STi. |
