the smaller the range the better because the less modifiers you have to put in and that is what breaks down into bad stuff and quickly.

So nobody recommends 0-40 cos it is a useless oil range. Heavier than 10-30, more modifiers, and still not high as a 15-50.

fact is whatever you run as long as it gets changed at 3-4K is all the same. I used to be a big syn user and I just havent seen anything out there to justify the cost.

My Subaru dealer used Castrol synthetic oil. Works fine, oil levels normal but the oil change costs $80.

... synthetic is more expansive but that's all..but who cares.. it's about 50 bucks more compare to regular, but let's say after 100 times of oil change u'll be spending 5g more than use regular oil...however, if u get to have your 100th oil change that means ur running about 250k miles on the car already...in this case, it can only happen if u use synthetic i believe...

Why try to do away with it? Dark oil is what you get because a modern detergent oil is very good at keeping things clean, and suspending the contaminants in the oil itself. If your oil stays light, then those contaminants are staying on the internals of the engine. Yuck.

fyi, from the mobil website:

"Mobil 1 0W-40's wide viscosity range provides unsurpassed levels of protection, fuel savings and the best overall smooth driving experience. Mobil 1 0W-40 keeps engines starting in Arctic extreme cold and cleans deposits, sludge and varnish often formed in high temperature operating conditions. Exceeding most of the global industry standards and the major leading builder requirements is the cornerstone of the performance reserve that lets Mobil 1 0W-40 keep performing well after conventional oils cannot."

"Mobil 1 0W-40 is recommended for all types of modern vehicles, especially high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged gasoline and diesel multi-valve fuel injected engines found in passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and trucks."

"Mobil 1 0W-40 is especially suitable for extreme conditions, where conventional oil often cannot perform."

the wider range provides better all-season protection than a 5w-30 weight oil. looks like mobil also recommends 0w-40 for our sti's, so i wouldn't necessarily say 0w-40 is a "useless range." i know a lot of fellow subie/sti owners that use 0w-40 w/o issue and recommend it.

Bad parts about syn: Blow by, cost, cost, cost. Did I mention cost?

After a while you are actually going to spend more than an engine rebuild if you just run dino at the recommended interval!

God I hate bad information.....

I just tried the Castrol RS 10w-60. I also noticed STi sells oil in this weight.

Anyways, I do have an oil temp guage and the things I noticed is that it warms up faster and then the temps stay at around 90c.

I had 20w-50 dino oil before and it would take 20min of driving to get it to around 85-90c.

We recommend draining
the oil between 12,000 and 18,000 miles
depending on the type of service and the degree of
blow-by gases contaminating the oil.

The filter, however, is only good for 3-4,000 miles anyways.

And, on the sti, changing the filter without the oil is a waste of time.
Did you read my whole post? Here's what I wrote, since you didn't see it.

And as far as oil change intervals being longer because you are using synthetic is another myth. Unless you are using a long drain interval syn. oil (like the Amsoil) it should still be changed at the same mileage interval as dino.

Yes Redline is a long drain interval like Amsoil. Mobil 1 and other cheaper synthetics are not.

I hope your kidding. While there is a lot of great info here and NASIOC, there is also a ton of BS from people that have no clue what they're talking about.
