IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | Have an 06 STI with about 1200 miles on it and a factory short throw shifter. When I first picked it up It seemed to have quite a bit of transmission noise, which seemed related to the shifter, but not rattle as many describe with the cable issue on Kartboys. I just kind of wrote it off since I had heard short throw shifters just make noise. It seems most realated to loading the motor, the more you load it the more the tranny talks and it reminds of an old dodge truck transmission with gear and fork noise and not just shifter noise. Now I have noticed in the last couple hundred miles it does seem to have decreased and only does it when its wound up over 5000. And with your hand on the shifter about to shift or if you have your hand on it right after it definately does it more so. Implies the shift forks are just that tight, but you dont need to put any pressure on it. If I hold the shifter back in second it is that same noise but louder I was curious since I missed 2nd gear 3 times in the last week (and its a very nice grinding sound too) where I never use to. Heard the synchros screaming in agony for a couple seconds each time, but I trust they can take a couple misses. So, where yours quite as can be or where are they suppose to sound like your riding the shift forks till they wear down a bit?? Its going in next week to see about having the clutch bled since my cluth delay valve is being inconsistent and shifts like crap compared to a couple others I've driven as well as having a slightly firmer pedal. I just dont know how they'd take to checking for a bad synchro or fork at the same time. Course if my clutch hasnt been working right, the whole thing could be knackered. Opinions welcome. Thanks Oh, I'm not hammering the tranny and give it plenty of times between gear, I'm in my 30's so am an old guy This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I was testing out some things I have been hearing in my tranny and wanted to know if this sounds like SOP for you guys. Do you notice certain synchros making more noise then the others, and especially when warmed up all the way? I am getting pronounced 2nd and 3rd gear syncro noise, but only when the car is fully warmed up. None when cold and beleive this one or not, I think it actually shifts more easily into 2nd when cold. That latter big could be due to my clutch not disengaging as well when hot, but I'd like to know if synchros on STIs get loud when hot. Appreciate any feedback. Earlier post related to this (longish). Tranny question - was your tranny tight and noisy when new? |

| Professional STI Driver | Is this the noise you hear when your letting off the gas in low gears like 1-3? I know I hear rattling type noises when I shift to like 3rd or 2nd and let off the gas a little after I shift. |

You cannot expect a lot of responses in a relatively short time, and posting multiple threads of the same issue is not allowed. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | SVT, thanks for putting em together. Good to know that others get lots of noise, I must have not noticed it in the other couple I've driven. Though the I dont recall them being hard to shift into second. Subienewbie, yes, pretty much on decel from high RPM, though its real load when shifting into second since I have to put quite a bit more pressure on the shifter to make it go in I end up pulling it against the detend which I'm sure is putting extra pressure on the fork / synchro . If I dont then it doesnt go all the way into gear and I end up grinding when it doesnt engage fully. Goes in Tuesday for the clutch, we'll see what they say. Outside the noise, does everyone else notice second gear specifically taking more force being required on the shift to get it to engage fully over 4500 RPM or so? |

| Professional STI Driver | If we are talking about the same noise, which I think we are, I dont hear it while shifting but only when I let the car decel from 3rd or 2nd. As far as grinding, I never done so yet, but I was always taught to depress the clutch all the way down to prevent grinding. I hope it is a normal thing with the tranny and good luck with your findings. Keep us updated with the results. Thanks |

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I just reread your original post and although I don't know of any noises related to my transmission (I have lots of noises in my car, I'm just used to them) I do know that I have grinded several times going from 1st to 2nd, even when I think I have pushed the clutch all the way in. I think several others have had this issue as well, but it seems like in the last 1,000 miles I can't recall this happening again. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | Thanks for that feedback. How bout shift effort into second? Even fully on the floor and being deliberate it seems like it quite a bit more. I've hears some say its just the large difference in the ratio taking longer to spin up second and that meaning it would take a bit more, but I cant say I've ever noticed in the other dozen or so manuals I've had. Course my memory sucks too. |

I'm pretty sure this is normal. I must admit that after reading the clutch-recall thread, I became a little more sensitive to the sound...but I don't think it is a problem. Has anyone else noticed this? This ad is not endorsed by this member. Please register or login to hide this ad. | |
