Default Gearing

I've not driven my car for about 4 months but if I recall 3rd gear pegs out around 83 mph, and 4th gear around 97 mph. Is there any way to increase the length of the gears. I am not talking about increased redline, but a different gear ratio I guess. (Final Drive?) Also if this were to be done would it adverely affect acceleration as in a 1/4 mi time. I am trying to be able to finish the 1/4 mi. in 4th gear, but it does not matter if the E.T. will just get slower.

changing the final drive of the rearend could accomplish your goals. Any time you eliminate a shift without having to bump the rev limiter you will end up with a quicker ET.

Unfortunately there aren't many options available to make the final drive lower to accomplish your goals. The STi six speed already has a 3.90 rear ratio, which is lower than all the other driveline setups. There is a group N 4.44 rear but that would make your issue even worse.

Of course there's also the diameter of the wheel/tire to consider.

if you will be diong 140+ in the 1/4 then you will need to use 5th but, i doubt that will be happening.

In a 2005 STI 6MT??? Perhaps my memory is bad, but I think I'm shifting into 5th gear at 92-97 mph. I never ran a 1/4 mi, we have 1/8 in town. But aren't even stock STI hitting 100+ trap speeds in the 1/4? I haven't driven since Aug, so I might be wong, let me know.

I've also wondered about lowering the final drive ratio, because I drive 45 minutes to work everyday on a fairly open highway, and I hate turning over 3500rpms at my highway cruise speed in 6th.

I also think with stage 2 or more, its got enough power to still be quick with lower gears, like 3.23-3.55

I'll cut the smart@sses off ahead of time....no I'm not going to solve the problem by driving slower.

Excuse my ignorance please, but what is the ppg 1-4 gearset. I'm assuming you mean change out those 4 gears, but what is ppg, do you have a link to another thread, or website please.
