Default Creeeeak coming from my shifter soffit

Any advice on how to rid myself of this sound?

Description: The sound of a floorboard in an old house creaking when you step on it.

When it happens: Stops and starts.

Investigation:

1. Listened for source of sound, which appeared to come from within the shifter assembly. Very mild vibration can be felt through the shifter handle just as the car stops, corresponding to the sound.

2. Checked and tightened everything under the car. During a test drive, the sound was the same.

3. Pulled off shifter surround, took another test drive. Sound appeared to occur during stops/starts when the tranny flexed. The tranny would pull the rubber soffit (e.g., boot) that surrounds the shift assembly causing it to rub somewhere and make a creaking sound.

4. Wondering if the tranny was flexing more than it should, I double checked all tranny mounts, and saw nothing out of the ordinary.

5. Took off soffit cover, and inspected edges of soffit. Looked okay from all angles. Applied some grease, and resealed soffit cover. Reassembled shifter surround. Took test drive, and creak was worse, louder, and MUCH more noticeable.

6. Wife calls me in to help with dinner. [/end] car work for the day.

=====================

So, that brings me to this point (while dinner cooks). By making the creak worse in step #5, I am probably getting closer to the source of the sound, but it has gone from a minor annoyance to a moderate annoyance.

Anyone experience this sound, and any advice on how to solve the creak?

Over the last few drives, the sound will go away completely, and then come back loudly. VERY annoying.

I don't have enough time to screw around with troubleshooting during the week. Hopefully someone will help with some ideas or experience before saturday...

Ok, I gotta admit. This is a new one on me. Let me throw some thought at this, and see what I can come up with.

Yes, I do hear it faintly when I hit the gas from a stand-still, but it is much louder when I come to a stop. The sound doesn't appear to come from the handle, knob, stalk, reverse lockout, ball joint, etc.

Actually, maybe it is coming from the base of the ball socket, where the rubber soffit meets the plastic. Hmmm...

Here are the modifications that have been done to the shifter:
- KB lever
- KB bushing
- KB stay
- TiC bushings
- KB knob
- a few zip-ties holding the reverse lock-out cable away from moving parts

Obviously, I have removed and replaced various structural and exhaust pieces under the car to install these parts.

Just for fun try a little bit of grease on the end of the stay where it goes into the rear stay bushing.

Just had a SPEC stage 2 clutch, pp, with aluminum flywheel installed along with other stuff, UTEC, fp green, turboxs turbo back, etc. and I'm getting a really annoying squeek from somewhere. A chirp really is more like it. It is really hard to determine where. Sometimes it sounds like it's inside the car, sometimes the shift linkage area, sometimes the motor or transmission mounts. I've wiggled, lubricated and shaken everything. It doesn't seem to be the exhaust.

Does it on acceleration and deceleration and sometimes going over bumps. It could be part of the clutch assy, the arm or something but I can't make it do it unless driving. It seems to occur when punching in the clutch for a shift or when clutch is out and I accelerate. It does it one time only each time. This would seem to indicate something in the drive-line that is flexing and chirping/squeeking. It routinely and reliably does it but I haven't been able to duplicate it under the car. Hwy61

I'm willing to bet it's your clutch pedal assembly. It's pretty common, and there are a few grease points. I'll see if I can find a pic of where to lube.

Quick update: For whatever reason, I haven't heard the creak for over a month.

Does anyone have some bood pics of spots to lube? I have a 04 sti with 27k miles and my clutch peddle squeeks.
I had my friend press the clutch in while I stood in front of the car. It took me a little to find it but when he pushed the clutch peddle down I heard squeeking and I saw this little spring under the intercooler, right in the middle on the front side that was squeeking.
It needs some lube badly or something, it only really squeeks when the clutch peddle is pushed past 3/4ths the way. How can I fix this?

i have this, and its awful awful awful. i got under my car and examined. it has been since i insalled my f+r bushings.

my passenger side bolt on my rear bushing is stuck, wont go in or out.

i dont get why that would cause a squeak. but that does make some rattling. i have no idea what the squeaking is. it at cruising speeds, over bumps. it does NOT happen when i am on the throttle. who knows.
