Default Tranny Oil advise on STi 6MT

30K is coming up...

I need to change my Tranny Oil.

I'm thinking of either going regular conventional oil or going w/ Silkolene if I want to do Synth.

And I also heard that Silkolene is not good for STi's rear diff so that many still keep using dyno for the rear diff.

I also heard there's a Subaru's synthetic tranny oil.
Is this true?

If I decide to use Dyno oil, what would Subaru use?

All I want is just grinding free just like OEM.
I don't really care about dyno/synth as they work great.
But why not spend more if I could get a better protection w/o additional headache.

STi owners or those w/ 6MT
Please help chime in on what oil do you use.
Please be specific on brand, viscosity and whether you put different oil in tranny and rear diff..

Thanks..
David

The stock tranny fluid is Valvoline (non synthetic) 75W-90. Some people go with the dino oil some with Motul. I've heard good things about Motul.

Motul Gear 300 75W90 if you want synthetic for the trans.
Motul 90PA LSD oil for the rear diff.

Just my opinion, I'm not a fan of the Motul 300 synthetic. I've had mine in for about 7000 miles and I've been getting some 3rd gear grind. I'm going to go back to dino here shortly and see if it clears up.

The more I read somewhere else the more headache I get.

Seems I can't just take one single brand that is going to be trouble free other than dyno oil.

I can just get the Valvoline (non synthetic) 75W-90 @ local parts store right?

Or does Subaru makes a specific tranny oil that is badged Subaru?

I'm stickin w/ dyno then..
I just don't want to spend $$ then have to drain again going back to dyno oil..

Amsoil series 2000 75W90 synthetic gear oil for transmission {4.3 quarts}
Amsoil 75W90 synthetic gear oil for rear differential {1 quart}

These have been in my car for 18 months or so {about 15,000 miles} with no problems. I checked the transmission oil last week and it still looks like it just came out of the bottle.

So this one is really necessary for rear diff?
Does Napa carry this one instead of dealer?

You should be able to find dino Valvoline 75W-90 at Autozone or Walmart. I bought a qt. from Autozone for $4.05. If you are not sure what fluid to choose, go with dino. Safe choice...

Okay..

Safe choice is Valvoline dyno then

But how about this:

Is this really necessary?

And also I heard there's a new Subaru Synthetic Oil that just came out.

Any news about this?
