Just did my fluid change today, used the yummy stuff (per Bruce's comment - Motul Gear 300); got it for $12/liter ($15 shipped) here: http://www.ngpracing.com/Merchant2/m...y_Code=gearoil

First off, I knew I had my share of missed shifts, so I reasoned I'd inspect the screen and magnet. Well, to my surprise, my magnet was fully coated in metal shavings/material...ouch!!! FWIW - I've driven approx. 31k miles over the past 15 months, good miles too. The screen is enclosed within the fluid pickup assembly, and the magnet is fixed onto a boss/raised section on the pickup. Could see one tiny FOD entrapped in the screen - but I wasn't about to stick anything in there; for one thing the orifice where the fluid is sucked up through had some sharp edges. When the fluid came out it was deep honey colored; can't say it smelled bad - it smelled just as bad as the new stuff.

Followed advise per this post:
What you need for transmission fluid change.

After I closed everything up, I went out for a slow test drive. First thing I noticed was the shifts were a bit more noticeable, i.e. "clicky" (that's the best way to describe it). I drove around for a while listening for the usual 2nd & 3rd gear grind - it was as good as gone. Only while pulling up slowly into my driveway in first did I hear the only bit of grind, and it was much less than ever before.

That's the best I can do to summarize at this point. I can give a road test update later - if you guys are interested. Sorry I don't have any pix, but I have no camera right now...batteries both went flat.

I found this on one of the many other threads that come up when you look for tranny fluid with the search tool. p/n: K0323AA093 . you can get it from subaruparts.com and subarugenuineparts.com . It only comes in like a 5 gal buckett for $130 though.

I went with the Vavoline dino oil. Can't go wrong with this and I am very happy with it.

yes...
went down to local subaru dealership to pick up some trans and rearend oil for my 30K...said they didnt have any and to pick up some redline 75w90 w/ additive... 6 quarts should be enough...rearend took a little more than 1qt...and a little more than 4 for the trans...

so when buying transmission and rear diff fluids:
5 quarts for the transmission
2 quarts for the rear diff

this is going to be enough?

I don't know if that's accurate, the stock fluid to my believe is Subaru trans fluid is the Subaru Extra S.

In any case, I'd go with that or the Motul 300 Gear.

I would not go with the Valvoline.
