Not many people have high mileage STis you know, so the number of people going for a tranny oil change/differential oil change is very low. And, given that the LSD gear oil in the STi rear diff is different than the WRX, ignorance ensues. Or should I say, lack of experience.

IWSTI Addict since: Jul 2005 | I used Silkolene that I got from Subaru of Dallas and my gear go in like butter. In addition it is a good idea to change out the rear differential as well. Rudy |

IWSTI Addict since: Dec 2004 | The dealer I went to today in Boulder has NEVER seen nor heard of this LSD fluid...the part # is not even in their computer. I asked them..."What do you replace the STi's rear diff fluid with?" and I got...."Uh, I don't really know." He did show me a 5-gallon barrel of the JDM 75W/90 tranny fluid they use in all of the cars...it had Subaru & Japanese writing all over it..definitely not USDM Valvoline. So, I put Valvoline dino 75W/90 in my Legacy GT's rear diff and Redline 75W/90NS in the tranny and it feels absolutely amazing - huge difference in smoothness and shifting. Why can't I use the Redline NS stuff in my STi transmission (NOT the R diff, just the tranny)? Some people say it works great and others say they've had grinding issues. I really want to give it a shot but don't want to waste $ and risk breaking a synchro... Anybody else running Redline NS? |

All other models, means WRX, RS. for the STi it's different For some sections, it does differentiate (gear oil capacity for example).

| The Next Petter Solberg Feedback Score: 0 reviews | Didn't read the whole thread, but here's been my gear oil odyssey. I changed my rear diff @ 10k, and it needed it. Looked like bad coffee. I figured I'd go ahead and do the tranny fluid too, even though it was too early. It didn't need it. The OEM stuff was clear and stinky just like new. From there I went through at a few changes... Valvoline semi synth: produced a 5th gear grind Syncromesh: 5th gear grind Sta-lube synth: grind M1: grind Valvoline dino: grind Then, on a tuning trip to SOG, I asked thm what they used for the tranny, and they had this OEM subaru stuff in black & white 5 gallon containers with Japanse writing on it. Well, wouldn't you frikken know it, after a quick period of circulation all my grinds were GONE! So, after many hours spent draining, flushing, and filling different oils tring to 'outdo' the Subaru engineers, I ended up right back where I started and am happier for it. Some local dealers told me they used Valvoline, Mobil 1 synthetic, generic 75w90, etc. I steer clear of them. Find the real deal stuff if you can. |
