I went with it because it is what subaru recommends, I'm not qualified to say if other substitutes are acceptable. Napa definitely doesn't carry it as it is a subaru product. In fact, my local dealer didn't have it in stock, and apparently has NEVER had it in stock. Makes you wonder what they put in people's STi's...I ordered it from subaruparts.com which is just an online subaru dealership (with the lowest prices).

Same thing happened to me. Idiot behind the parts counter tried to tell me the STi gear oil is synthetic, which I know for a fact it is NOT!! This is after he told me he didn't even know the STi had a 6 speed!

OEM transmission fluid part number

I'm on my second day of having Valvoline 80w-90 dino oil in the tranny and I have to say it shifts better now than it ever did with the Motul. No grinding or hesitation getting into gear. From now on, it's dino for me.

Klaymon,
Any reason you went with Valvoline 80W-90? Or, was this a typing error and you meant to type 75W-90?

I've been using Motul Gear300 for the last 22,000 miles ... I only get a slight grind on 3rd when the tranny is still cold, or when shifting really fast, which I don't do that regularly, but still bugs me.

So next time, Valvoline dino 75W-90 for me as well.

Like me, he probably went to Advance, where the only 75W-90 is some no-name crap or synthetic. The only Valvoline I found there was 80W-90, so I got it. It's still within Subaru specs, and I was just topping off, so it isn't a problem.

Oh, I see.

Yeah, I wouldn't think the 80W-90 would be a big problem, except maybe in extreme cold climates where the cold weight may matter. In your case of just topping it off, neglible at best

Exactly. If you look in the owner's manual, it lists different weights and what temp ranges they're recommended for. 80W-90 fits right in there for the temps I see in Ohio.

Sweet thread. Thanks to all of you who have taken the time to fill in the gaps for me. I'm just a hair over 30k and need to change my tranny fluid...

Interestingly, when I went in for my 15k service check, the guy at the service desk said they (Gillman Subaru) could NOT change the fluid in the STi because it was a six speed...strange enough.

Cheers!
