I've been driving cars with clutches for a lot longer than most of you guys have been alive. I've driven everything from non-synchro crash boxes to farm equipment to high end sports cars to semi trucks, and I've found a way to shift them all as well as they can be shifted. I have had the bogging experience described here with the STi, and I know with 100% certainty it's not me. The engine almost feels as though it goes into fuel cutoff for a brief moment, then comes back to life. My best guess (and it's a complete guess) is an ECU glitch.

I think the STi's clutch is a bit more agressive than a standard issue clutch. There for I think it bites earlier, and harder right off the bat than most others I have driven. Your expecting it to slip a bit more before it starts to grab, but this one grabs almost the instant you start to lift you foot.

I would tend to agree with this statement. I also think it must be a glitch, because I know EXACTLY what you're talking about.

Update -

I burned my clutch a little bit during a launch a week ago, and guess what...

No more bogging. I can now smoothly engage my clutch at around 1200 rpms with no bogging.

Problem solved. I guess the clutch was never properly broken in. Any opinions or comments as to why burning it up a lil made such a big difference in the daily driving characteristics of my car?

The clutch could have gotten glazed when you burned it.

Well dont do it again. Its like draining your jacuzzi the fast way by cutting a 1' hole in the side with sawsall.

Being new to Suby and use to more powerfull cars with nicer drivetrains (from a drivability standpoint) I found exactly what your saying.

But Digital said exactly what I found to be the case, you have to be painfully slow on the clutch. Part of it is likely that BS delay valve which prevents you from actually controlling the clutch.

I'd also say WDB is right about the ECU being somewhat glitchy. Probably trying to be too smart and ending up in the way of itself.

As noted by others, the real time driving maps just make the situation worse if your doing stop and go. I have gotten into the habit of clearing mine before going out for a drive in the fun stuff to get back to full power and less herky jerky on off throttle transition.

They are quirky but still wirth it.

lolololol, "everyone hold the clutch half way and floor it for 30 seconds!!!!"""

lol, that was funny, well i guess i should burn the hell oiut of my clutch now

what if it was like a mandator break in procedure,

step 1: breaking in the clutch

and so on

i do believe that tho. On a hill the other day, i was slipping the clutch w/o knowing (on a hill), i was like treating tit like an automatic, and guess what, " the clutch took longer to engage and therefore was harder to bog!

Lol.

Seriously, I already burned mine a week or so ago from revving up on a Dodge Truck that kept trying to toy with me. When the light turned green I was still revving and when trying to disengage the clutch I just burned through 1st and 2nd gear, and had the horrible burnt clutch smell for the next 2 days. Guess I've successfully broken in my clutch.
