Default How long should stock clutch last..UPDATED

What is a reasonable amount of mileage to expect the stock clutch to last under normal/hard conditions? Not talking about taking it to the track every other weekend. What is the longest you have gone on stock sti clutch? Reason I am asking is because I have a 2004 sti with 20xxx miles on it. I took it to the dealership because the clutch is toast. They told me that they may not cover it because it is a "wear" item. Which I totally agree with, but am I expected to buy a new OEM clutch every 20,000 miles. Subaru also qouted 1,400 dollars for a new clutch. I would just rather get an aftermarket clutch that would last longer and work better. Just wanted some fellow STi input. Thanks

almost 30,000kms here, with about 3 drag-days in total, some spirited driving nights around the mountain pass near my house. The clutch is still holding good

i also have an 04 sti and have 40k miles now. clutch is still good. i estimate it will live another 20k to 30k or so. i drive it hard and occasionally launch hard when needed. question for you. just trying to understand your shifting habits. when you're in between shifts, do you leave your foot slightly on the clutch or do you completely remove your foot after each shift. resting your foot on the clutch, even slightly, will have an effect on the life of your clutch.

well that really sucks that your clutch died so early. really sorry to hear about that. there's many reasons for a clutch to go early, it could be constant abuse, improper break-in, but most likely in this case a defective clutch to start with. the clutch is covered under warranty for three years 36k miles. there is no way for them to prove that is was negligience on your part so if you ***** enough, they will fix it. if they don't, try going to a different dealer. do some searches about clutch warranty, i remember reading a lot of threads on this topic. good luck bro.

21K on mine and hold great, I slipped it twice in that time where I actually smelled it and its still perfect. I would shop around for clutches and labor estimates rather then taking it to subaru.

They called me today and told me my clutch was pretty badly abused. They found hot spots everywhere. Flywheel was gone. Pressure plate was unuseable. this is when my heart sunk... Then he told me that as a gesture of good faith they will replace everything for free!! WHAT!!! Couldn't belive it. Man Subaru has really come through for me in a HUGE way. I love them. All i have to do is circle all 5's when I get my survey in. Well the dealership I took it to was Palm Springs Subaru. I have modifications on my car to include a tbe, perrin crank pully, typhoon ram air, cobb ap. They are a great dealership to work with. I would HIGHLY recomend them!!! PALM SPRINGS SUBARU!!!!!!!!!

its part of your warranty just to let you know, its in writing that its covered. However, you are modded and they "could" have blamed it on that but either way you got a new clutch.

good stuff redskin! a dealer that needs the work will do it. they still get payed from subaru so it's the dealer's call, and in your particular situation, most dealers wouldn't do it. but i guess you lucked out and struck gold! or atleast saved yourself a couples g's!

I found in another thread that a "wear" item is covered for 1 year. my car is almost 2 years old.

I think you got pretty lucky, but hats off to that dealership for covering it. My GF had the same stuff replaced on her 03 Tiburon after 35000 miles. Took fighting with the dealership for 3 months to get it fixed.

I do feel very fortunate and it took no fighting on my part. It probably also helps that i have been taking my car there for service over the years. I guess it pays to make a good relationship with a dealership.

I would definately put a postive review for this dealer on all the boards you can find.
