Wow, that is surprising given all that you have done. I guess I would remain cautiously optimistic until you have the car back and are driving away.

20k on my clutch with many track days, a few medium launches, and some lots of canyon driving. Should be good for another 10-20.

Default Opinions on Longevity of clutch

I was just curious as to people's views on the life of the clutch of the STI. Here is what concerns me. I'm very good with clutch when it comes to long life. I've owned many manual cars, and never had to replace clutch once. Two cars I've owned went over 200k miles on clutch, and many well over 100k. I'm a little concerned with the STI. This is my daily driver, and I see a lot of traffic. I've adapted to this clutch, and learned how to make traffic driving smooth and easy. This was natural, but I feel that I may be shortening life of clutch. By driving this clutch like I have other cars in past, I'm getting that odor I've never had before with any other car I've owned. It appears to me that I may actually be shortening the life by making car smoother in stop and go traffic. Any opinions on this are greatly appreciated. I'm wondering if I should just stop making this clutch adaptable for smoothness, and I should just live with the roughness of city driving. I don't like that smell, and I feel I may be better off just not making car friendly. I don't know if I am worrying over nothing, but this clutch is like no other, and I feel I may be reversing my fortune by making it smooth. It's a hard habit to break, because I just naturally control clutch in order to make it smooth, but I can't help but feel this type of car is not meant for this type of smooth driving. Thanks!!

Yeah don't ride it, that will kill the life of it over time. Don't forget the most important thing about this car though. It's a street version of a race car, and our tranny (built by Prodrive) and clutch are very strong and will withstand a lot of abuse.

Thanks guys. It's funny because I'm not a clutch rider, but this car has made me one. It's gonna take some time to adapt and use this clutch the right way. No doubt I'm riding it, but that's really what it takes if you wanna get a close to normal car feel. I guess this is what I have to live with when buying a car like this as a daily driver/ work car. Now I'm just gonna focus on minimizing the clutch stink. I'm not really an STI enthusiast like most of you. I went to dealer intending to buy an Impreza RS as a great year round daily driver, but walked out with an STI because I have a habit of buying the top of line model, and I couldn't resist the power. I don't regret it, because having a car like this for daily driving is spoiling myself rotten.

I have the same issues. My clutch is pretty "grabby." I'm pretty smooth on an even surface, or downhill, but on a steeper incline, I have a hell of a time with that clutch. I've gotten that clutch smell on inclines. It seems like when I'm on a hill, if I don't take off feathering between the clutch and the gas at around 3000rpm, the car is going to bog down bad and stall out. Aside from that, I don't have any issues.

I hate the STi's clutch. It's very difficult to drive smoothly in stop/go traffic in that car. It seems like I'm either taking off like a bat out of Hell, or I'm bogging it down and jerking off the stop.

In everyday driving, I'm off the clutch by 1000-1500 RPM. Sure you have a lot of lag that way, but if you aren't driving fast, what does it matter. Your clutch will thank you.

I'm on my 2nd STi and I had no problems with clutch modulation on either. Stop and go and/or up hill incline, I can always keep it a little above idle with just the bare minimum amount of throttle, no revving needed and no bogging. However, I've been driving manuals for the last 18 years and learned driving on a stick and had plenty of practice on cars with truely crap clutches.

So I don't know, but its got to be your technique.

I've been driving stick for about 4 years. I never had a problem with my Volkswagen.

With the STi, if I'm on a hill and let off the clutch at about 1000-1500rpm the car isn't gonna go anywhere....in fact, it'll probably stall because it can't make it up the hill.

The clutch may thank you, but you're putting a lot of strain on other parts by bogging out consistently like that. Bogging all the time isn't good for the motor. Approximately what rpm do you leave hills from? I'll try it (at 2am when nobody is on the road). If I don't leave on a hill at around 2500-3500rpm, the car jerks like crazy.

Are you saying that you can ease the clutch, and make it very friendly, yet at same time, never get the stench from a burning clutch? I can do what you do to, but sometimes I get that odor, and that means I'm wearing down the clutch long term.

Sometimes I get that clutch smell when the car is still cool. It doesn't happen often, but it does happen every now and again. The car could be cool, and I normally let out on the clutch at about 1500-2000rpm, and sometimes I might get that smell. I don't yank my foot off the clutch real quick. I "ease it out."

I try to be real easy on the clutch. I don't launch the car at high RPMs, and when I get on the gas, I roll into the throttle, and I even normally shift at 6000rpms. I'm not even getting near the redline. In all honesty, I'm a pretty "careful" driver. I honestly don't really strain the car at all.

What gives with the clutch smell?
