| Professional STI Driver | So mistake number one...letting a friend drive my car. I was in the car with him obviously and he got a serious hard on for the power he felt from when he rode with me so he just went all out in driving and saw the car (I think it was second or third) he put the tac up into the 7200 range. I have 8500 miles on it . How many times is it going to take running the car in that range to seriously see some damage. And if lets say that that exact time my friend rode the car into the 7200 rpm range, and something started to defect in my car and I took it to the dealership, I'd be able to BS why something isn't working properly or will subaru be able to pin-point the problem and take my money? | Senior STI Driver | Well rumor has it on modern cars every time you hit redline it logs the date and time. If this is true the deale rcould screw you out of warranty service. But the repairs will mos tlikely have to be done immediately after the car hit the limit for them to be able to do this. So you should be alright. I accidently hit the fuel cut-off, like your friend did, and it did absolutely nothing to the car, still works fine. Just don't make it a habbit. |

IWSTI Addict since: Nov 2004 Trader Rating: (0) | The tach reads high. Fuel cut on the tach is 7200, but in the ECU is 7000. No real harm done. If he missed a gear and revved it beyond fuel cut (i.e missed 5th and hit 3rd) you could be looking at a spun bearing or snapped rod. If the dealer really wanted to dig into it, I have read that the data is stored in NVRAM in the ECU (not cleared by a normal ECU reset), but this data is cleared if you reset the ECU with the Cobb AccessPort. It stores things like max rpm, max mph, etc. Just another reason though, to never ever let anybody drive your car. |

| Grassroots STI Racer | If he just hit the rev limiter, there rly isnt anything to worry about. There is a reason that it is there, so you dont blow your motor. Ive read somewhere that our cars are safe to 8k, but thats worthless since we stop making power way before that. |

IWSTI Addict since: Sep 2004 Trader Rating: (52) | I've hit 7400 or so a couple of times, mostley for a few 7k shifting and it goes up to about 7400. I had a friend miss 3rd and hit 7500. My car still runs just fine. I've heard of a person hitting 8000 on his STI, and he didnt have any problems. I would think that subaru would make there motors have some leeway and not blow up 100 rpm's over fuel cut. You should be just fine. |

IWSTI Addict since: May 2003 Trader Rating: (7) | Ha, I bounce off the rev limiter in 2nd all day during autox!! I don't know Subaru's test parameters, but the US Big 3 run engines for hundreds of hours (ranges from 200-600) at worst dynamic rpm, which typically isn't redline (often just below). I'm sure Subaru beat the snot out of this engine in testing, knowing us owners were going to beat the snot out of it every day...drive hard and be happy! |

IWSTI Addict since: Jun 2005 Trader Rating: (0) | I always wondered why cars with short shifts don't have a gated shifter. My only guess is because of looks. I think it would look good on the STi and prevent shifting into the wrong gear. Just a thought. I've only driven the STi once and never missed a shift but it could have happened easily. There's not that much leeway. This STi did have the short throw shifter option. Not sure how the "stock" shifter feels. |
