Default Gear Ratio Options

I had to look for this information for a second time in about six months so I am posting it here so I can come back and find it when I need it again in six months :

Transmission Ratios:

Zerosports // USDM 04/05 // JDM
1st: 3.083 // 3.636 // 3.636
2nd: 2.133 // 2.375 // 2.375
3rd: 1.611 // 1.761 // 1.761
4th: 1.208 // 1.346 // 1.346
5th: 0.929 // 0.971 // 1.062
6th: 0.737 // 0.756 // 0.842

Stock/JDM Final Drive Ratio: 3.9
Group N Final Drive Ratio: 4.444

A customer asked us if we can get a hold of the Zerosports 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gears, and then supply the JDM 5th and 6th gears. I am going to see if I can find someone that can plot the curves for the above 3 sets of gear ratios and the Custom Zerosports/JDM ones.

I'm extreemly interested in the final drive change how does it effect the car (reviews/opionons)?

I did the 4.444 on my wagon and it's awesome. Definitely needed on the 5 speed. It makes the car much more fun to drive as the WRX with the 5 speed is really lacking on the low end torque.

As for the STi, ask Kevin, he has the 4.444 on his. In a straight line it makes you slower, we've pretty much proven that. It certainly makes the car feel insanely fast as you're just always blowing through gears though . For accelerating out of turns on the other hand, the 4.444 is ideal. The car has so much torque and massive accelerating power in every gear it's pretty nuts. To give you an idea, I went for a ride in Kevin's car that just has a TBE and Stage 2 AP, then went for a ride in a car with all kinds of crazy mods (green, fuel pump, injectors, fmic, etc. etc.) making 380 awhp and Kevin's car felt faster LOL. Even with 380 awhp the heavily modified STi couldn't push me back in the seat as hard as Kevin's could with a TBE and a 4.444 conversion.

Is it worth it? On a WRX, definitely. On an STi, maybe. I wouldn't do it to my STi, but Kevin loves his . The STi gearbox is short enough as it is, making it so you have to shift even more often is insane IMO. But then again, if you're insane like Kevin...go for it . lol

for something in between the 4.44 and stock 3.90 there is always the new LGT 4.11 gears. I doubt anyone has tried those just yet, but they should fit. They would give you better acceleration but not as crazy as the 4.44.

Kevin, when you are plotting, those this 4.11 into the mix as well, I am interested in it for when I build my transmission.

I was hoping you were going to do the plots. I will be out of commission for a few weeks. Just too busy working on projects.

The 4.444s are slower in a straight line, but because its rare I am racing off the line unless its with Ben I did them for a variety of reasons. If all goes well, I can put them to their full potential if and when I look to get a motor that can rev much higher with a decent forced induction setup. That should cure the straight line issue as well as make the STi lethal virtually anywhere in the power band (at least I hope). I still have a consideralbe amount of research to do on this.

ok, I did some basic work on this in the attached zipped spreadsheet. With some basic knowledge of excel you can create whichever graphs you want comparing the different gearsets and final drives. I left tire size as a constant. I threw in the 4.11 final drive that is in the Legacy GTs, but I am not 100% sure the gearsets are compatible with the hardware in the sti. I'm really liking the way the JDM gearset matches with the 4.11 final drive......

BTW, thanks to 4mla1fn for the original spreadsheet that I added to.

Is this thread dead? I think the Zerosports ratio's look perfect (w/ stock final gearing)... 1st is no longer a granny low, 60 is reached in 1 shift, and the quarter mile in 3... I'd imagine taking a shift out of the 0-60 run would prb drop a couple tenths (4.4-4.5 range??)... Who sells the Zerosport tranny and how much?

^^^^

Do we know anybody that has installed the Zerosport gears? It's expensive, but it would be great to hear from someone that has done it.

Mike
