Question '05 Front Axle Replacement

I noticed that one of my from boots is in 3 pieces. I'm at 125K so I figured it would probably be best to just replace it, even though I haven't experienced any strange noises or noticed any grease being flung out.

Are there any other parts that I should replace. I know I'll need a new axle nut. Am I suppose to replace the c-clip also? I think that I may replace the hub/bearing. Any suggestions would be welcome.

Thanks!

I swapped a front axle also because of a boot, and didn't replace anything else. I'll be keeping an eye on the axle nut for a while.

The axle comes with a c-clip. You could maybe do the transmission seal. I felt up the seal while I had the axle out, and it seemed not quite uniform at the bottom, but no leakage so no problem.

I had the car at an angle while jacked up, and no transmission fluid dripped out. Also, I was able to leave the top strut eccentric bolt at torque, so my alignment stayed put.

Edit: I don't know how you didn't see any grease. It took me a while to clean out the inside of my wheel!

The service manual has a good set of instructions in the drive shaft section.

1. Break axle nut loose. Have a friend press the brake; service manual makes it clear to have no weight on the bearing when you loosen the axle nut, or the bearing might get damaged.
2. Disconnect sway bar link.
3. Remove brake caliper and rotor, I did the dust shield as well.
4. Disconnect tie rod.
5. Remove ABS wheel speed sensor.
6. Disconnect ball joint. I couldn't remove the ball joint from the knuckle, so I removed it from the control arm.
7. Pull the hub off of the axle. I left my top (camber) bolt at torque to keep my alignment. Loosening the 3 top hat nuts would have made it easier, but I didn't want any chance of my alignment being different.
8. If you care about your old axle, it's only supposed to be removed by prying it out from the transmission. I had a friend help by pulling the axle while I pried it, since I wasn't going to use it again.
9. The service manual says to replace the seal. I didn't, no leaks. Install the new axle. I pushed whatever I could from the green metal close to the transmission, and a little extra from my friend on the rest of the axle popped it in. From what I was told, the axles can be pushed, but shouldn't be pulled.

Glad I found this thread. One of mine are leaking and I need to replace it.

Good info an pictures. I have to change pads/rotors anyways so it might be easier since I am already going to have many things off.

Thanks,
-Nigel
