I noticed it a couple months ago but it wasn't very loud. Its gotten louder. There was a thread on NASIOc similar to this noise and the cause was the diff. I'm thinking its the rear diff. It only makes the noise when I'm at partial throttle cruising at 65 to 67 mph. I'm goin to stop by the dealer and talk to the service people. I hope my local dealer is knowledgeable enough to fix it. This is the first problem I've had on the car. I just put 10k miles on it and I got it 11 months ago. Its stock and I never took it to the track.

I was wondering if any other poeple had this noise. Because there were a couple people with STIs on NASIOC said they did.

Default Longest thread ever... postwhores chime in

I have the SAME thing....just noticed it about 1 month ago. Only happens about 68 mph.....right in that space between 65 and 70 on the speedometer. It is a LOUD, sorta howl type deal. The car still drives perfect. Absolutly no shutter or vibration. But it's definately noticeable. Let me know what you find out. Write it out in detail and I'll be taking it in to my dealer as well!

Those Bridgestones are noisy tires...I switched to the Pirelli's for the winter and they are much quieter.I was really surprised...they're not as sticky but they're not too bad in the wet.

I'm pretty sure its not the tires. Its a really high pitch hum or whine coming from the rear of the car. It doesn't make the noise at any other speed and only when I'm on partial throttle. If i let go of the gas it stops making the noise. I can actually hear a little of it with the radio on. Its gotten louder thats why I started to get concerned.

Default Sti into the Garage...

I think it's the tranny as well, which is why I'm concerned. I'm used to having differential noise from all my cars after throwing aftermarket gears in, so that's not as worrisome. The STi is a noisy car, and if this is "normal", then I'd be OK with it, but since it's new and seems to be getting louder, I am a bit worried. In ref to the above though, it's most certainly NOT the tires. Wish it were!

I noticed the noise right after I installed the diff bushings. Seems to have made the noise louder.

When I was stock at around 3000 miles I first noticed this noise. Sounds like a somone ringing a pitch fork and its only in 5th or 6th gear for me at around 60 give or take a few mph. I thought it would be the diff or tranny. I guess it's more common than I thought. I still hear it

I have a similar noise at 70MPH, seems pretty normal and common. I believe it is happening as the transmission gets properly broken in.

Keep an ear on it and if it changes drastically or something feels wrong, then begin to worry.

14k and I have the same noise at 65mph since day one. Does not sound mechanically threatening and did not get any worse. Sounds like a transmission whine to me.

I went to the dealer today and talked to the one of the service writers. I talked to him about it and he agreed it could be the diff. But the subaru master tech was on vacation for two weeks. So I got to wait until than. I hope the noise is normal. I'll see what the master tech thinks. I'm goin to ask one of my old auto tech instructors. He's a ASE certified instructor. As a hobby he builds trannies for domestic drag cars.

I also stopped by the to see the new legacy and its a great looking car. If I was older I might want to get one. But for right now I'm happy with the STI. The sales people said there was a rumor that the 06 STI would get 400hp. I didn't believe it. They were probably talking about the ESX STI.

Default RE: Check out this hilarous snow crash video

the problem that we all share is that there are so few STis that the dealers do not have enough good experience to tell us if something is "normal" or not. Typically we, the members of online forums, have more first and second hand knowledge of the cars than their techs do. Many techs have only worked on an STi once or twice simply because there aren't that many of them on the roads and they haven't ahd time to see and diagnose all the issues that could come up. Bear with the dealers, they are in the same boat that we are sometimes and need to learn what this car is going to do as it ages and wears.

my 2 cents
