Default Re: Loud high pitch humming at 65 to 67 mph.

Its been almost 3 years and 40k miles since I started this thread and I still have the noise. I've put in some Kartboy Rear Subframe Outrigger Bushings (race version). Which have mad the noise louder but I couldn't stand the constant clunk from the rear diff. I plan on getting the TiC Klunk Killer-Comfort soon. They didn't have comfort version when I had put them in years ago. Also my Espelir exhaust does drown out the noise a little.

I recently changed the diff fluid out and I didn't find any metal shavings (subaru lsd oil was used). This didn't get rid the noise either.

I have a feelings its a common problem since I've found posts about this on both IWSTI and NASIOC.

Here's a link to posts where people have experienced the noise when they installed the TiC clunk killer kit.

A one piece drive shaft will def make some humming noise. My 240sx was loud as ****.

My fluid change did nothing. There wasn't any significant metal on the magnet either, so I guess I am going to have to deal with it.

I made sure I used the subaru lsd oil too. The dealership up the road said they just use regular gear oil when doing fluid changes and have never sold it before. Retards. Im glad I looked into it first.

That sucks you are still hearing the drone, doesn't it drive you nuts? I brought my car to a garage and put it on a lift and brought it up to 65 mph so they could listen with a stethoscope and was told they thought it sounded like one of the three pinion bearings is going.

Default Re: Quick Q: Front Diff and Trans share fluid?

for what its worth

i have a 2005 sti with around 60k on the clock

i have a similar resonance type howl at highway speeds, i'd say its 70-80mph.

The noise produces the sensation that its all around you, I can not pinpoint which end of the car it comes from, its also not reproducable and only happens intermittently at partial throttle.

My initial instinct was its nothing serious, and it doesnt seem to get worse.

only heard it maybe 3 times since i got the car over 6 months ago

Mine happens every time I hit 63-66 mph. I could not tell where it was coming from either but I read up on it and had it on a lift. Very, very annoying, but I will learn to live with it because a new diff from the dealer is $1200.

Some people have said that using the thinner bushing from the kart boy outrigger bushings did reduce the noise. So I went out to my garage and changed it out to the thinner bushing. Surprisingly it actually reduced the noise. Its a lot less noticeable now. But now the diff doesn't feel as tight as before. I'm willing to live with that. I plan on getting the TiC rear diff mount bushings instead of the Klunk Kit.

i have the same wining sound at same speed and mine got worse. i took it to PIA which is a good subaru shop in the northwest and they looked at the fluid and said there was metal shavings in there they told me to get the rear dif replaced.

I agree with jaydow11, mine happens about 60-70 and I think its between the passenger side mirror and the A pillar whistling. Usually happens at cruising speeds, and happens with both windows up and down.

I also have that gear whining while driving at speeds also, after I installed my TIC Transmission Crossmember Bushings

I installed the TIC read diff mount bushings in and so far I love them. With the Kartboy Rear Subframe Outrigger Bushings (Race) I no longer have the diff clunk. The rear also feels super tight and I've noticed a slight increase in NVH. I rather live with that than the diff clunk.

I still have the hum and like I posted before I'm using the thinner bushing from the Kartboy Rear Subframe Outrigger bushings. However, the hum is not very loud and most poeple wouldn't notice it. Also what I noticed before when I used the thicker bushings the hum would occur around 70 mph. The hum was also a lot louder.
