I have the whine as well (23k on the clock). But I also have Whiteline lockdown bolts. I've just accepted it as part of the car. I'm going to change the tranny and diff fluid soon, so I'll see if that helps at all.

hey whats up guys, i used to have an 02 wrx with upgraded turbo and the whole 9 yards, i just bought an 06 sti and obviously with my other car i had a few tranny problems (haha thats an under statement) so anyway theres 28000 on the odo. and i started hearing this noise everyone is talking about. im a tech at bmw so i said oh god not another trans noise, so i through the car up in the air and listened with a stethiscope. the noise we are all hearing is actually audible from 20mph till 70mph which is how fast a co worker of mine got it up to on the lift, the noise is not loud enough to hear in the cabin until about 60-70 which is when we all hear it. so i listened along the drive train and the noise was not coming from the diff but it was coming from where the u-joint is in the rear of the drive shaft.

FWIW, I installed outrigger bushings and the noise has been GREATLY reduced. I don't know what this means, but I'm happy..

Do you think replacing the u-joint would fix the problem?

I had the exact same noise at around 29k miles. Took it in and the subaru tech said it was my rear diff goin bad. heh, who am I to complain. I got a new rear diff out of the deal, and the noises stopped. I'm now at 45k miles, and I can hear the noises again...ever so slight (so far).

At 12k miles my rear diff was diagnosed as causing the whine. The dealership replaced the diff and the noise went away. By the time I reached 13k miles the whine was back worst than it was before. Went back to the dealership and the rep told me it's normal. All I know is that it is annoying as hell. It's audible over all the other noises the car has.............wind, tires, radio, etc.

I have the whine as well from 65-67mph at partial (or no) throttle. It sounds like it may be normal, though from reading it's inconclusive and I'm going to follow up anyways.

Has anyone in SoCal had a dealership perform a repair under warranty for this (or similar repair) on a Stage 2 modded car? If so, where did you go?

I have a wine but I'm pretty sure it's from the notorious wind wine that happens between the passanger side mirror and A pillar....

It gets worse and becomes non speed dependent, on or off throttle. Sounds like an ungrounded stereo but does not change pitch. No one could identify it and then a memo came out to install some rear bracket to fix the issue. Didnt work. I had a regional rep come in from Jersey to look at it and continued to tell me that is was the spt intake. On and on it went until i told them to blow it out their a$$ and sold the car. Wrote a rather intense mail to SOA and their counter offer was invoice - $3500 on an '08. And here i am.
