I know the service bulletin was for the wrx but it still shouldn't really matter. I really don't trust my local dealer. Doesn't matter I'll just get a loud exhaust. From what I read the diff noise seems normal. From my own experience with my friends who have aftermarket gears, they get diff noise.

This what one guy said on nasioc about the damper

"As far as the damper is concerned, there shouldn't be any problem with that as the fix, if they are using something like I am thinking of. A damper is basically a block of metal and rubber that bolts onto the axle. It is designed to cancel out a certain frequency. Many axles come from the factory with dampers. It isn't used to cover up a problem or anything, it basically eliminates the noise associated with a characteric of the axle. Sometimes axles from their design just have a noise associated with them. Dampers from the factory will be put on to eliminate a noise common to the axles"

I am glad I found this thread. I installed the SPT catback this weekend, and since then, I am getting this 'whine' at 60-65 mph. Occurs throttle on/off, lightly brake on/off (dissapears outside of this range secondary to decreased speed from brake). Also, the normal drivetrain noises seem louder, liek the ones you get when you are coasting in 1st gear coming to a stop...

I am not sure how changing the exhaust is causing this ??? I double checked it, and it not rubbing anything, or moving around/vibrating at all.

It's what happens when you have as many gears as we do meshing inside the gear box...Turn up the radio.

I have the slight hum/whine cruising on the freeway myself. I was also told its from the way the gears are cut.

Ya i got the same noise at 65-70 mph and partial throttle, started at about 23k and now i'm at 25k miles and seem to be a bit louder? Has it been comfirmed that this is normal?

Yea I have the same issue. I noticed it the day I bought the car. That TSB is only for the WRX and the STi apparently has a different rear diff. I only get it under partial throttle as well around 70MPH. I believe it's the gears themselves humming. I put on my Group-N trans mount and the noise got even louder. I think it's just another one of those noises that we're just going to have to deal with.

A thought tho, I have an 04 which has different LSDs (SureTrac) than the other years. I thought this might be part of what is causing the humming. What year are your cars??

My WRX has this whine noise around 62-67mph because I have the TiC rear diff bushings. They pronounced the noise more when it was almost silent stock.

I have the same whining noise and it's driving me nuts. I have an '06 with 10k miles on it. The whine peaks at 65mph while applying a constant throttle, just enough to maintain speed. I can't tell if it's coming from the tranny or rear diff. Has anyone with the same problem been able to get it resolved?

I'm still wondering how many cases there are of this noise. Like someone else posted earlier, the noise is similar to the high pitch tone of a tuning fork. I had a car load of people today in both the front and the back seats and determined it is only audible in certain locations. In the front seats, it is only audible in the normal driving position and if you lean your head over to the door. If you lean toward the center in the front, you can't hear it anymore. For the left and right side back seat, it is not audible in the normal seating position, but lean toward the center and you do here it. In general, there is no specific direction the noise is coming from.

I did take it to the dealership today and demonstrated the problem to the service manager and a technician. The noise can only be heard from 65 to 66 mph. They did hear it but have no idea what the problem is. I only have 11k miles on it, and they suggested to wait a little while when it is worse easier to diagnose.

Has anyone had this noise and had it fixed? Any input or thoughts would be helpful. The noise is driving me nuts on longer drives and occurs at the speed I most typically drive. It can even be heard over the radio, exhaust and tire noise.

my car has right at 17k on it and it's making the 66-7mph whine too, i was kindof worried about it cause i cant just drop by the dealership with all of my mods, glad to see its more of a "normal" thing or should i say common noise

I have the same whining at 65mph with the same conditions as everyone else, 04 sti with 43k miles on it. Still to this day theres no official TSB on this problem for the sti? I mean the pitch its pretty annoying and loud at the highway and i can hear it even with the radio on

Its normal, the cause is due to the way the gears are cut, already mentioned previously in this thread.

The STi drivetrain is practically indestructible....the only weak link are the axles....and you only break those on EXTREMELY hard launches with SUPER sticky tires. I dont worry about this slight humming noise and I regularly bang gears and abuse the tranny (and I'm 70ft lbs and 50 whp over stock )
