The noise I have is coming from the rear of the car. So I don't think its the transmission.

I have a really nasty hum that comes on when I am going like 125 or more. But that is only over the radio. But when I turn the radio down then it is gone. Maybe it is a loose ground or something but I hear that whine only at really high speeds.

I wouldn't worry about it, just makesure its documented like Salisbury said. You've got 60K for it to fail. No rush.

I'll see if I get a resonance at 65 to 70 mph. re: gear whine, god I love it - its part of the pseudo race car personality the car has.

Almost 3000 miles and no noise.

Default It is likely the rear diff needs replacement

My '04 started making the whine only under throttle at around 30,000 miles. The noise was audible from ~40 mph and up, but was most audible ~70-75 mph. The key for me was that it was a new noise and an annoying one at that. The technician had no clue, but the service manager was sure it was the rear diff, and ordered it be replaced. No more noise.

Sorry to bring this back, but has anyone else who has experienced this whine @ ~68 mph gone to the dealership and had it resolved? Was it the rear diff/tranny/aftermarket bushings/?? ?

I started getting the whine at 40mph and 70mph after installing the Kartboy rear diff crossmember bushings.

Guys with the rear diff whine, check your tire pressures. If the tires are inflated to different pressures the circumference of the tires will be a bit different. With the tires having different circumferences the diff will "work" harder to keep the rotation the same on each side. I have found that keeping the tire pressures the same reduces the whine but does not make it disapear. Just something to check.

Which install order did you use? The whiteline one or the kartboy/peaty one?

Well, I guess I've put about 20k miles on the car since the start of the 68mph whine, but no ill effects noted as of yet! I have not taken it to actually be fixed, but I have brought it up before. I will certainly be making more of a "deal" about it as my odometer reaches somewhat closer to that 60k mark!

I installed them exactly like the kartboy instructions told me to.

It seems that Subaru has issued a Technical Service Bulletin for the rear diff noise. There is a old thread on Nasoic. All subaru recommends is using dynamic dampers to eliminate the noise.

This is EXCELLENT info Kyongyun...seems like it's been a long time in the making for something legitimate to come from this thread. Have you approached your dealer about this yet? Would be curious to see how it went. As for myself, I have already copied the link to the service bulletin and sent it to one of my email accts that I can access from any computer. That way, the next time I go to my Suby dealer, I can pull it up and show it to 'em. Nice thing is, I never have gotten much of any flak from them, so hopefully, it'll be an easy thing to remedy. However, I am at somewhat of a loss as to what exactly "dynamic dampers" are. Any idea? Thanks again Kyongyun...

No idea what they are. Only time I've ever heard of dynamic dampers are suspension components. I'm not goin to bother with my local dealer because they suck and I don't trust them.

Alright Kyongyun, this is what I found out from my dealership. I called them and not'd them of the service bulletin, giving them the exact bulletin numbers. They looked this up and "apparently", it's for a regular WRX. The head mechanic at my Subaru service dept owns an STi and has the same howl that we are complaining of. He says it's a normal sound for our cars and has not been shown to lead to any sort of damage to the overall driveline of the vehicle. If this is true, then I'm fine with that. However, if there is something you feel I'm missing, then clue me in. To be honest, the noise has not gotten any louder, but it is still definately present. Have you had any greater luck with yours?
