best way to stop this car is mash on the brakes.. the ABS will do the work. as for engine breaking along with the brakes... save your clutch.. car's brake distance depends on friction between tires and road not how big the brake is..

What about slowing down while in gear (without downshifting)? I've always wondered if that wears down anything? Thanks

if u slow down on gear it will not mess up anything on your car, as long as u stay in the proper rpm band... it will make weird sounds as the clutch is slowing the gear down...

and another thing.. this is an STi... put it on neutral goin downhill at 80 mph and have the confidence that the car will handle just fine..

Stay in the proper RPM band? What is it and why? I usually slow down when I'm in 5th or 6th. I let it go all the way down to around 1,500 RPM then go to neutral. Sorry for asking a lot of questions, I just like learning about stuff whether or not it it's important.

heel-toe is waht racing drivers use because it does infact make less wear and tear on the tranny rather than just shifting from 4 to 3 while dropping the clutch rather than matching the revs,

For almost every car, the most powerfull force it can apply is negative acceleration via the brakes. How quickly you'll be able to stop is mostly dependent upon the tires, and how much grip they have on the ground. Modern hydraulic brake systems don't have much trouble exceeding this limit. If you're only trying to slow down, engine braking will not help you stop quicker.

Now if you loose your brakes, the situation may be different.
