My buddies neighbor just got a new '05 STI. He swapped over his turboxs full exhaust (magnaflow version) from his old WRX. He's still breaking the car in, not shifting over 3800rpms. 10 minutes after driving he got a check engine light. I fogot which code he pulled, but it was related to the exhaust. I asked and he's running the catted version.

Any ideas whats going on? My '04 with the same exhaust doesn't pull CELs.

Well even with a high flow cat... he WILL get a CEL light. Some may have success and not pull a CEL and some may.

Did your buddy install the spark plug extensions (two of them) on the o2 sensor that is located in the midpipe?

P0420 i bet, you need to have a mechanical fix, plug extensions, or MIL eliminator.

or you can get an accessport and it will be gone.

No disrespect, but WTF would anyone do anything to their car before its even broken in???!!!

I mean even if I was the most mod crazy person I would at least hold off until I got a chance to see how the car performed stock. And to top it off he can't even make use of the mod because the car ain't broken in!...that makes all kind of sense...???

My post was asking why the CEL came on, not to get blasted for putting an exhaust on a new car. He already had the exhaust from his WRX that he traded in. Why not put it on the new car? I would have.

you arent getting blasted for putting the exhaust on the car... you are getting blasted for putting it on the car before it had 1500 miles on it... You should never modify an engine until it is broken in.

The CEL is coming on because the cat does not function as well as the original... you probably need to do the resistor CEL fix.

If you can explain, in engineering terms and with adequate PROOF, why it makes a difference to break in the car before putting an exhaust on, I'd be happy to hear it. While you're at it, present a full explanation (again with engineering principles and statistical proof) of why the "soft break in method" is even necessary. Otherwise, be quiet and stop acting like some damn F&F lemming.
Before you get all bent out of shape maybe you should re-read your original post...

...He's still breaking the car in, not shifting over 3800rpms...

...which means you should really be asking him for "engineering terms", since I never said anything about a brake-in period being good, bad, or even necessary, so I guess it still stands that your "buddy's neighbour" is a dumb-ass for modding a car when he can't possibly make any use of it.

OK I see we're dealing with a true genius now. You're the one who insinuated there was somehow something wrong with modding a car during its first thousand miles.
He still don't get it  ...oh well!
