Default 05 STi Clutch....Help!

Unfortunately my clutch is going and needs to be replaced at 36k. I am looking for your opinions on which clutch to choose to replace mine with. Yes, I used the "search" option and the "FAQ", but I just want individualized advise based upon my specific situation.

I have an 05 STi that I use as my daily driver. I have a full TBE, K&N Typhoon short ram intake and Cobb Accessport pro-tuned, dyno-ed at 295 ft. lbs torque.

I never track the car and do not street race that often, but I want upgraded performance, longevity and drivability, as my car is my daily driver. I have been going back and forth between the Exedy Stage 1 or the ACT HD Street Disc Clutch. I have heard mixed reviews on each. Any other opinions/suggestions/reviews would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

My stock clutch lasted 50k miles with track time and auto crosses. Put in an Exedy stage 1 at 50k. Car now has 60k with no track time and two auto crosses. Clutch is worn to rivets. If it was defective and Exedy does the right thing to replace it for Me I'll endorse but until I hear back from them I can't say their stuff is worth the box it comes in.

My car is stock drivtrain by the way.

Seems unlikely that you're going to get upgraded performance, longevity and drivability all in the same package. As with most things in life, there are trade-offs.

Upgraded performance may come at the expense of longevity and drivability.

Exclamation Re: 05 STi Clutch....Help!

Hey guys! I need help with picking a new clutch too!

I have a different issue though. See... my knee isn't really all that great anymore due to a car wreck several years back. So I really don't know which clutch kit to go with that will give me a near stock pedal feel and still be easily driven on the street.

My car is currently putting down about 480lbs of torque and I'm looking at throwing more power at the motor. So I'm looking for a clutch that will hold somewhere around 550-600lbs of torque.

I'd like to install a new clutch a.s.a.p.

So... any suggestions???

Fair enough, which one would you go with?

I need near stock pedal feel. That's the most important. Any suggestions from there?

SacKing23 - The ACT HDSS will provide you with the performance, longevity and drivability that you are looking for. It is rated at 515 ft/lbs at the flywheel witch will net around 390 ft/lbs at the wheels....you will have about 100 ft/lbs of wheel torque to gain before you will start to wear out that clutch significantly. The clutch pedal will be marginally stiffer than stock, but thats because its a better clutch than stock for holding more power than stock....you will get used to it. Since its a full disk face it will not wear out prematurely like a puck clutch will.

Here is why not to get either the Exedy Stage 1 and Stage 2 clutches. The Exedy Stage 1 clutch is an organic disk that holds 321 ft/lbs at the flywheel.....taking into account 25% for drivetrain loss you are looking at it wheel torque capacity of about 241 ft/lbs....not good enough for your numbers to date. This is mostly due to a weak pressure plate. The Exedy Stage 2 clutch is a 3-puck clutch, which if you don't know is horrible for longevity and drivability.....performance wise it would be great if it were rated higher than 400 ft/lbs at the flywheel....which taking into account 25% drivetrain loss again is 300 ft/lbs of wheel torque capacity. This is right on your limits and if I were you I would not consider that acceptable. Again this is mostly due to a weak pressure plate. The bottom line is both of these are not a better clutch than the ACT HDSS.

If it was me, I'd go with the stock clutch. But that reflects my particular needs and circumstances.

It looked like there were some others on here that felt there were better alternatives than the stock pieces.

Maybe they can share a little bit more of their impressions.

You are kind of SOL unless you want to spend the money on a quality multi-disk clutch like a Tilton or the RPS Carbon-Carbon. You might be able to get away with one of the higher rated disk clutches like the ACT XTSS or the RPS with the Max Series pressure plate. Other than that you are into puck clutch territory.....which will suck for your left leg.

OP, I went with the Exedy 3 puck and so far it is holding up. I was going to go ACT but they were backordered and since the stock clutch is Exedy, I figured what the hell. Haha.

are you keeping your mods limited to the ones you have? if so, just get another stock clutch. no reason to need to upgrade it if your not going to need it. plus, the stock clutch is already exedy.

but if your looking to add more hp in the future, then its a different story.
