You'll be fine with a stage 2 setup.. 350whp and up is where you wanna start looking for a new clutch. All depends on driver too.

how much torque can it hold. Cause some stage 2's with a protune make tons of torque.

For the *normal* person, the stock clutch is more than enough on a stage 2 set-up, no matter the protune numbers. However, that is not to say that if you drive very agressively and beat on the car that it won't fail...

It's plenty strong - I drove for 12K miles with a GT30 and 390# to the wheels and it still looked fine when I pulled it off, and this was after a bunch of miles at Stage 2 before that. As long as you don't launch it all the time, it'll hold up great.

It's sh*t. Never autocrossed or launched the car for almost 30k miles, drove it like a grandma, finally do one hard day of driving up and down some canyons after just flashing Stage 2, and it can't handle the heat and warps itself. Just out of warranty and I need a new one. Rubbish, in my experience.

Did you buy your car used or new? Because if it was used, and possibly returned to stock..... you dont really know what the clutch saw before you

There are no specific clamp load or torque capacity numbers for the stock clutch assembly, but the clutch is made by Exedy. The Stage 1 'upgrade' from stock is an organic disk that holds 321 ft/lbs. Now if you take into account 25% drivetrain loss for AWD then you are left at 241 ft/lbs at the wheels. Now if you have a tuned stage 2 that is not going to be enough as most people are making somewhere around 310-325 wtq. Again take into account drivetrain loss, but calculating flywheel torque capacity (using 310wtq) you will need a clutch that will hold 413 ft/lbs at the flywheel. If the Exedy Stage 1 is an upgrade and it is not substantial enough, think how inadequate the stock equipment is to handle a tuned stage 2 STi....just some food for thought.

I did buy it used, with very low mileage from a private party. Older gent too, and I know the car was never modified (the engine bay was quite dirty, I don't think he ever went under the hood). I guess it is possible he was a crappy driver, but he really didn't seem like it. Either way my clutch is on its way out and it caught me by surprise that it's doing so this early. I'm not too happy.

maybe its your driving... not trying to be a jerk. But maybe something you do when your daily driving your car is wearing your clutch faster. Ive seen alot of people rest their left foot on the clutch when driving, and I frown upon that and mention to them that even the slightest pressure on the clutch can slightly dis-engage the clutch enough to cause it to slip a very small amount which is slowly wearing it down. ALso maybe its the way you accelerate from a dead stop. or your shifting. or are you engine braking? Its a big gray area. Either way you look at it. Unless your getting like 10-15K miles on a clutch (which is way to little) then I wouldnt be to bent outta shape. I would rather change a clutch than a transmission or axles.

I wouldn't be worried about what WHP the clutch can hold but rather motor HP. I believe clutches are rated at crank HP and Torque. But anyway with a stage 2 the stock clutch is fine. I've had mine on for 70K miles now (35K of that being Stage 2) and I'm just getting to the point where I need to replace it.

Clutches hold torque, not horsepower but 70k is good, I replaced mine at about 48k...

As Flycaster mentioned as long as you aren't doing too many launches and high speed runs your stock clutch will hold up just fine. I have put some serious mileage on my OEM clutch on both Stage 2 and aftermarket boost. Quite a bit has to do with the driver and driving style.
