Could not shift out of 6th gear!

Cruising from Des Moines last night to Chicago (Suburbs). Got to my exit after about 100 miles in 6th on cruise control, I go to start downshifting on my exit when I push the clutch in, I move the gear shifter and it moves up and down freely as if it's not attached to the gear, but doesn't move side to side(as it normally wouldn't anyway). The clutch properly actuates and I can rev freely when it's in, but when I let the clutch back out, It's still in 6th gear no matter what I do. It's not pulling 6th gear out. What happened? Any ideas?

check your shift linkage thats 1, and rare cases the shifter fork broke, mine was stuck in 4th once because of a broken fork.

my car today dropped metal out the bottom of my car and my car got stuck in 6th as well. just took it to the dealer but it wont be looked at till tuesday due to the damn 3 day weekend
