Default '05 STi won't go into reverse?

Here is a question, my shifter appears to need adjusted? First gear is in the middle if the shifter boot and reverse won't lock in, it goes in half way and when I try to move it just pops back out! I have the boot off and I was told by Subaru that it can be adjusted but it looks like from underneath? Any help would be appreciated. I have searched but can't find anything! Thanks for any help.

Brandon

P.S. It has a COBB short shifter on it if that matters.

the Cobb short shifter DOES matter!! They are double adjustable, and often have problems with hitting the outside limits of the shift area.

check out Cobb's installation instructions on their website to see how to adjust it.

That should be a good place to start.

I talked with COBB and since it only has a problem with reverse thay suggested the reverse lockout. I have adjusted it in all directions and it still does the same thing. It was working fine yesturday and today, won't go into reverse. I have no idea what changed, I hope someone has some ideas. Thanks for all your replies.

1) moving this to the drivetrain forum

2) I have a COBB d/a short shifter. Take pics of it and I'll see if I can help at all.

So I have determined the shifter has nothing to do with the problem. I have removed the boot and adjusted the shifter in multiple ways and it is hitting nothing. I had the car on a lift and I used a pry bar to try and slide the shift rail back ( carefully of course ) and nothing. I can put pressure on the shift rail and try to roll the car and it won't, like it's in gear but as soon as I release the pressure it acts like it's half way in and just grinds aginst the gear. It's the same when I try to go in reverse under it's own power, it almost feels like it's in gear but as soon as I put some power to it, it just pops out and grinds. I am lost other than saying my reverse is done.

If you could get pics of the shifter with the boot off, maybe there's something obvious we're missing. Trust me. I did.

your syncros are gone. If it goes in but the second you put some gas into it and it pops out and grinds it means your syncros are gone

My feeling is that the you're right Kit, it just sucks because I have only had the car for 6 days It only has 33,000 miles and I really hope the powertrain warranty will still be in effect. Well, whatever the case thanks for all your responses.

It more seems like it won't go all the way in. It's on the edge. I am sure it's the same, It doesn't neccessarily 'pop' it just doesn't stay in, it is on the edge of going in and coming out and it decides to come out of gear. I haven't delt with this type of problem before, either the clutch is bad or it's not, this is new for me. Thanks for the input, I am going to talk to Subaru in the morning. The service department open's at 7:30am PST. Hopefully they can tell me something new. I don't presume they can, this forum, from what I have read, is smarter than most dealerships I have talked to. Again, thanks for all the input, let's keep it up, hopefully we can help all who have an issue like mine.

This may sound like a silly question, but are you 100% certain the snap ring is seated? If you have the reverse lockout cable in correctly, did you remove the wrench that was holding the tranny switch (if you followed the same instructions I did, though this would merely mean the lockout ring wouldn't be necessary to put it in reverse).

Reverse doesn't have a syncro, guys.

EDIT: Also, in that second to last pic, the reverse lockout cable looks really scrunched up at the bottom of the shifter. The Cobb is REALLY close to the chassis in reverse. Is that cable getting in the way maybe? I'm sure this occurred to you, but check it just in case.
