See this thread about adjusting the reverse lockout cable. I think this may be your problem.

Thanks for the help everyone. I have adjusted the cable both ways just to try to get something to work. Still nothing. Here is a couple pis of the way it's adjusted now.

So I tried to physically push the lockout up on the case to see if it was the cable not pulling it enough but even as far as it will go it still won't go into gear. The cable operation is smooth from the shifter. These pictures are with it at rest in nuetral. What's wierd is the shifter has been on the car for like a year, one day had reverse, the next day it won't go in. Hopefull you guys see something that I don't, Thanks again everyone.

Brandon

If this is a new thing unrelated to a shifter or bushing install, you might just have lost reverse.

So the car is at Subaru and they won't diagnose anything until the stock shifter is back in the car. I don't have the stock stick. Can anyone help? '05 Sti, I'll post any findings from Subaru. Thanks guys.

I have my old stock shifter. Not a short throw. I suppose I can drop it in the mail to you if you can't find a local with one.

Don't worry about it. I can send it Priority Mail Flat Rate and it'll get there in 2 - 3 days. You just make sure you ship it back to me.

PM me with the complete address and I'll try and get it in the mail today.

Sorry to revive a dead one but I just wanted to update. So reverse in the '05 Sti actually does have a synchro, yes I saw it with my own 2 eyes. I somehow rounded the edges off of each gear and the synchro wouldn't fully engage reverse, and that is why it would pop out. Mystery solved. Thanks for all the help everyone! Boondock, you are a life saver! Well, money saver anyway
